The clone was her childhood friend (the original was seeing what happened to him). Yes, the original has been trapped in that thing by Fei Wong Reed for a number of years, although not his entire life.

I'm confused, the clone Syaoran appeared at a really young age to be found and met little Sakura in the Clow Kingdom. So does that mean the original Syaoran in the tank was imprisoned and grew up in the tank or was he already older and the clone was made younger?

You know... I have this feeling that Syaoran is from Clow country, there would be no other reason for him to feel sad when Sakura is cold towards him otherwise.
There was this one flashback- at Tokyo, was it - where her father talked to someone (well, Syaoran, ofc) next to Sakura... I believe that was the original and not the clone, though I don't really have much of a base for that believe ~_~ Just my guess,intuition,guts thing or something like that

Ah, damn, I just remembered that Syaoran(clone) was introduced to Sakura by ... uh ... that guy(what was the name of the person that found him >< ), so I guess what I said above isn't really an option

I think Syaoran was imprisoned when he was fairly young; the clone seemed to be the same age as him, and Syaoran definitely isn't an adult now (and however many years - seven? - passed while he was in that tank thing).

Maybe the original is CCS Syaoran that was kidnapped and kept in the glass chamber making him unable to grow. After all, he uses the same spells and sword and some of Fei Wong Reed evil schemes were in CCS/XXXHolic/"our" world, even has been stated that he is Clow Reed's relative (main plot Clow, not Sakura's pops).

What I am getting, though, after reading the comments and Wikipedia while half asleep...

-CLONE Syaoran was made by that evil dude with the beard to retrieve the feathers for bad purposes.
-REAL Syaoran put half his heart in CLONE Syaoran to foil evil bearded dude's plans (Excuse the lack of names, I closed the window and I don't feel like opening it again ^^; )
-REAL Syaoran therefore was "controlling" or "living through" CLONE Syaoran for a period.
-CLONE Syaoran started to wake up during the fight in the library, when Kurogane first witnessed his awakening. Readers assume it is an alter ego, and later begin to assume that the (REAL) Syaoran-in-a-tank is the source of said alter ego.
-So, when CLONE Syaoran fully awoke in the water, the "consciousness" of REAL Syaoran returned to his original body....

The original didn't "used" the clone to live, I think he just "shared his humanity" with the clone to try to make him develop his own human feelings (to make it not just a tool for killing/gathering feathers). In fact, if my memory is not that bad, Fye tries to seal again the "half heart" borrowed from the original before the clone kicks his arse and steals his eye. The original seal made by original Syaoran is broken when he is released from the crystal thingy.

I think what u wrote was right Anye, It makes so much sense. So if Syaoran was living through his clone, then that might be the reason why he love/likes Sakura.

I'm not saying that it CANT be, but its kinda unlikely looking back at the reactions of Clone Syaoran when the original was being unsealed (Rekord or Castle-in-the-moon). And they share (shared to be more exact) the same soul (in a simmilar fashion to all the people with the same appearance from different worlds), so is explainable why he likes Sakura. Maybe he has his own Sakura too.
