I think they're just to help the reader better understand the current situation. I didn't understand what was going on either until I read through it all again. Actually it's still a little fuzzy since the first time I read through it all, I didn't remember all that happened in the previous chapter, and reading it a second time cleared some things, but not all things. Still just read through it again and yea...it should just clear up any questions you had about why what's what.
