    I know what Media Players are, but not Codecs

    Codecs are add-ons so your player can play a certain type of file.

    for instance, you need certain kinds of codecs to play ogg, ogm, and mkv files

    Ok, so if my Mplayer can't view ogm files, I can just download a specific Codec Pack, and it could then view it?

    Yeah, just get K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It comes with Media Player Classic.
