Computer Freezes and Shuts Off
My computer always freezes and turns off whenever i try to play a game. It never used to do this and its been happening for a month or so. I can still watch anime and such but sometimes even then my computer randomly freezes and shuts off.
I have Windows XP Professional Ed, AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.83 GHz, 512 RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600.
I thought that maybe it was because I had no free hard-drive space (i have around 210 Gigs, of which 190 gigs was used) so I moved my anime and manga to my external hard-drive and now i have 175 Gigs of free space but the problem still occurs.
I don't have a virus to my knowledge and i have Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition that is fully updated. Also, my computer is not overheating as I've checked to see whether or not this is the problem. Also, I tried cleaning out the inside of my computer to see whether or not dust was the problem but it still randomly freezes and shuts off. I can leave my computer on for days on end and no problem surfaces until i try playing a game. Also, it froze and shut off today while i was doing Disk Cleanup and Defragmentation at the same time on the same drive (probably not the best of ideas but i forgot i was fragmenting when i started the Disk Cleanup). I just dont know wuts wrong with my computer.
(side note - when i try dl-ing from mirror 4, it says i must be a member but obviously i am a member and only dl 2 files at a time since after reading 1 or 2 chapters of a manga, the 2 dls r finished and i can just start dling the next 2 while reading the new 2 i just dled. Neone know wuts wrong with my login?)
I'm sorry to say that it can be alot of things to which are causeing your problems. But one thing that comes to mind are your video drivers as your crashes occur when attempting to play a game. Since you have a Nvidia card, I recommend pulling down their latest driver and or the current beta driver released. If this still doesn't fix the issue your Video card may be at fault, check to make sure that it is not overheating. If you have parts to swap out to test try your RAM, and Video card. In my experience its usually been one of the two if its not the drivers.
If you have an illega copy of Windows and still applied all the update patches this might happen sometime. When windows get a error scripts which it couldn't work out, the error occured and supposely the "evil blue screen" will be shown up (But by the default setting the screen wont be showing up) and after that follows a restart.
Best way to find out these problems would be in the Event Viewer. Unfortunately, it can only be view with XP Pro version. Home Edition sucks ass. But it seems you have Pro version. Go Start --> Control Panel--> Performance and Maintenance --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer --> then look under System on the left side. There you will see errors related to the system. You can also look at Application to see what apps have failed in the past. But System is what you should worry about most. It will tell you if any of your hardware is failing or not. Usually freezes are due to hard drive failures. Look for the types of failure in Event viewer. Hope this helps.
