    Default FTP downloading...?

Just wondering is there a certain way to download from an FTP "site"? I've never used it before and know nothing about it. Help appreciated.

Edit: I'm asking because when I try to download any of the files from

    ftp://ftp.poupey.com/

I can only get part of the file. I download half of the file and then it finishes.

    Thanks,
    Touya06

Uhh... most of the time your browser will handle it with no problems. Just go to FTP://whatever and is should bring up a directory tree for you to go nuts on.

There is specific software for FTP, but I don't know much about it. I'll look into it some and edit this post with what I find. For now, just try your browser and clicking the files just like you would a hyperlink.

    EDIT
Well that didn't take me long. Found this site here for basic info on FTP.

Don't know why you need to have a FTP client. If the place is configured for open access, then you shouldn't have to worry. If it isn't then you may need a client to log in with. Other than that, I think that I can do most FTP stuff with Firefox, and, if I have to, I can use my download manager (FDM) to do a lot of the extra stuff without the need of another program. Don't know what to tell you. If you have problems, try a FTP client, then post back and I'll help look for a solution. If everything works without one... then hey, you saved some HD space.

    Nevermind. Char's explination pwns all.

I'll get you started off with some basic commands

To access a FTP site you need a username and password. Then to access it you type this in the address bar:
    ftp://<username>:<password>@<IP address>:<port number>
where IP address is the IP address or fully qualified domain name of the site. Port number is the FTP port number which is usually 21 but not always the case.
So the full address would be
    ftp://Touya06assword@www.stuff.com:21
If you're using a browser you can basically drag and drop

However if you're using command line or equivalent then I'll assume you'll only have the read permission so the basic commands are:

    FTPpens FTP protocol

open: opens FTP connection with remote computer. eg open www.stuff.com

get<file>: where the file is the full directory address of the file eg get C:/ftp/stuff.txt

cd: change directory on the remote computer

ls: lists the files in the remote directory

pwd: gives you the path of the current directory

close: to terminate the connection with a computer

    bye/quit: terminates FTP

    help: self explanatory

EDIT: Haha cheers Volv. But that FTP client thingy does look a lot easier for those not experienced with FTP. Maybe give that a try Touya06 if you're still having trouble with it. It's all explained in the link Volv posted above

I don't see why you would have a problem, I also have downloaded off that FTP just by using Firefox. I then later switched to flashget because the download kept timing out. Everything seems to be fine after I started using flashget, maybe you should try a download manager such as Flashget or Download Accelerater Plus.
