    Default Laptop Touchpad not working

    Hi

My touchpad stopped working after my laptop was dropped on the floor. I have used system restore and tried updating the driver for it, but it is still not working.
When I touch the touchpad, the mouse pointer does not move and both right-click and left-click do not respond?

My laptop details can be found below. Any help would be appreciated.

    Laptop: Toshiba Satellite P200-12D
    System: Windows 7 64bit
    Synaptics TouchPad v6.3 port PS/2.
Location: plugged into PS/2 mouse port
    Driver version: 13.2.1.0
    Driver Date: 12/06/2009

The device is enabled and working properly according to the device status of the device (properties).

Its definitely a hardware failure. Dropping it must have caused damage to the parts.
I recommend you take it to your nearest computer store, they might be able to get you a free check up and quote you a repair price.

    Hope this helps.

    This.

It's a hardware failure. If you are lucky, the ribbon cable just came loose and can be fixed easily (for a price). If you are unlucky (like me), your motherboard will have developed a fault and will be very difficult to fix and will most likely need to be replaced.

I tried updating the drivers, but there was no change.
I also tried opening up the laptop, and checking the wire for the touchpad, but there was nothing wrong with it. I plugged it out and in again, but still no change.

I guess it is now conclusive, that the touchpad is not working due to physical hardware issues caused by the fall.
I have to take it to a repair man.

    Thanks for the help guys

Remember to get a quote first. You don't want to dive straight in only to find out too late that the repair costs more than a new laptop.

Exactly. If you have more than one repair shop around, ask them all for quotes, and compare prices. Remember, prices are not set in stone- try and haggle them down as much as possible. Many shops, if you tell them of a competitor that has a lower quote than they, will match it or beat it to try and gain your custom. Be smart about it, and you could save yourself a lot of cash!
