    Default Windows icons

Just a minor problem, but it's getting very annoying. The windows desktop icons and icon folders now appear as the unknown file type icon. I can still access them but I'd just like to know what is wrong. Cheers

Ughh... that sounds like a major headache. If your running XP, and haven't done anything major in the last few days (major updates and the like), just try to use the system restore and roll windows back a few days. If you run 2000, and actually know where the system restore is for that OS, and have made a restore point in the last few weeks, roll it back with 2000's restore program. This sounds like the easiest method to try, as I am willing to bet that some dat or dll file is screwed up.

If not, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to start an explorer session (open my computer or something), go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types, and start reseting the icons by hand. Then for the program icons, right click on them and go to properties. In the properties, you should be able to find a button that allows you to set the icon picture (may be under advanced).

The latter suggestion sucks royaly, so I will google around a bit, and if I find anything else, I will edit this post, or make a new one.

I actually tried the latter solution before i posted and the only icons i could restore are the ones not stored in the shell library file of XP. So that means all my gaming icons have been resored but My Computer, My Network Places, My Documents etc etc seem to have forgotten on how to put pants on when i boot up (=

My restore point was created about 6 months ago lol. That's a lot of data that's gonna go missing if i go back.

Well, i haven't formatted in over a year, so i guess it's time. Unless you happen onto a solution

Cheers for the help Volvogga. Really appreciate it

I can't find ANY solutions to this. Its weak!

    Half-assed suggetion time!!!!!

How about Alternate Clicking (right click for most) the desktop, going to properties, going to Appearence, Clicking Advanced, and finding Icons on the dropdown bar. Then change the size of the icons by a good 4 or 5 points. Maybe they will reset themselves.... worth a shot.

    gahh!!!
Just re-read your post and realized that you just have a problem with the actuall Windows Icons (read it too fast the first time.... I'm a dumbass). OK! That I know how to fix (I hope).

Go to Control Pannel, Display, Desktop, click Coustomize Desktop, go to the General Tab, and click Restore Default!!!!!

    DAMN!

Ok, sense your computer is running, I wouldn't think that it is a vital system file, so this last idea probaly wont work.

Just try to pop the XP disk in the drive at startup, and see if you can go into Windows Rescue mode and repair it. Doubt it, but it is worth a shot. If you know what CAB file it is in on the disk, the repair prompt will let you extract it from the file CAB, and overwrite the Craptastic one.

Other than that, all I can think of is to Hack the damn thing, but this is something that I would attempt as a last resort. You may be able to do something with a program called ResHack. It won't be easy though. Messed with the program a bit over the weekend, changing the look of my start button (no more bile green), and it would be a bitch unless you knew what you were looking for, due to you get a big tree of variables for the file that you can change and incorperate into the file. You would be on your way to great 1337ness.

Sorry but I'm out of ideas. If those don't work, write a e-mail to M$ or something. You SHOULD NOT have to re-format for this shit. Its sad that that has become almost normal to do. Fucking Microsoft.

    Sorry man! Good luck.

Fucking Microsoft indeed. Dunno if i can write an email to Microshort. They'll prob want my serial number or something, but i'll give it a try. Who here actually owns a legit M$ program anyways
Trying to use a repair disk ain't a bad idea. I'm at work now but I'll do that 2nite. If that doesn't work then I'll backup everything and try to Hack it or use some tweak utilities
Most likely I'll have to reformat. If this is the case then I'm gonna have 3 partitions. One for WinXP (seriously can't do without it ), Linux and the 3rd one for my ghost images. Don't really trust restore points

Have you tried System File Checker ?

start > run > cmd (enter)

    sfc /scannow

you will need admin status, XP disk and may have to reinstall any service packs.
you should read up on it ( or anything else people tell you to try )before you use it, MS utilities have been known to do more harm then good.

No I didn't. I just manually changed all the icons through the shell32.dll file. But i still had a few icons such as Desktop and My Documents still busted. I couldn't be bothered formatting then, but two days later all the icons were magically restored. Beats me

    Thanks anyways
