PC Problem: This application has failed to start ....

Hello,
Fist of all, I don't know much about PCs, so I am having a huge problems with my Windows XP laptop. All of a sudden Windows Defender, Antivirus and most other program won't run, and when I try to run Windows Defender and Grisoft AVG; I get this message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." I have tried windows restore but it tells me the restore failed. I have tried multiple restored points, but nothing. I just tried to run CDBurner XP to save some photos onto a CD just in case, but it won't start and gives me a ".NET frame Initialization error".
And speaking about .Net frame, since a few days ago there is this pending .NET framework 3.5 service pack 1 in my windows update, but I have tried to install it, but I can't either the computers hangs or it tells me the update could not be installed. The only thing I have download it recently is the last Firefox, and nothing else. The only thing that seems to be working is my internet with firefox.
Please help, I have no idea of to do, thanks.

I had a similar problem once. It was AVG what did it. For whatever reason AVG antivirus dies and it takes a bunch of files with it. I thought they'd have fixed that problem since 7.5 but I guess it happens so infrequently that they don't bother to fix it. What I did was reinstall everything from scratch because it was easier that thrying to fix avg. Also, I use another antivirus that doesn't freak out and ruin your system. Avast or Avira are pretty decent free av.

Have you tried any other burning software? Ashampoo burning software is good. How about using windows backup utility or driveimage xml to backup your files to another drive.

Perhaps there is another way to fix your computer, but I'm giving you an easy way.

All members are reminded that it is inadvisable to download and use software from strange sources. (I.E. using a registry editor given by an ad spammer is probably not a good idea)

Problem solved, by first uninstalling all versions of .NET Framework and reinstalling and also uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2005 package. Then Reinstalling Windows Defender and AVG. Before trying that I used Ashampoo to Burn irreplaceable photos, just in case. Ashampoo did the job well, thanks for the help.
