Thread: WinXP taking forever to shutdown

I don't know why but it used to take like seconds for it to shutdown but now it takes like a couple of min and it still won't shutdown.

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz
3.25GB RAM
AVG 8.0
WinXP SP3
Computer is defragged

Don't know what other info is required, just ask.

list applications you have that you would think are system related (anti-virus, firewall, drivers, etc). also list down what you remember that you did before the problem occured.

Not much that I can recall.

Got Realtek and GeForce drivers updated.

It might be some software hanging.
try to close as many apps as you can, before you shutdown to see if you improve it

You can lower the timer that windows kills that app, modifying some registry

XP home or professional?

I think the problem might lie in some of your programs trying to install updates (like virus protection ect.); my own system has been doing this a few times. Give it a good 10-15 minutes- if that doesn't work, just forcibly shut it down (ya' know...pull the plug); works for me.

Actually, I noticed that sometimes the shutdown is as fast as ever whereas other times it seems to take forever. I edited my reg to kill app in 3s but it still doesn't help it.

I could probably manually close down some programs but I forget to (and it's a hassle).

You could set your updates to manual or just turn it off. Your updates maybe set to update everyday.

Last solution would be: delete the partition and reformat the whole thing.
