Thread: Problems with HD

So, couple weeks ago I formated my old comp, reinstalled windows and updated it and everything.

yesterday I tried to turn it on and it just went blank. Nothing happened after start-up, only those few things in the start where during it I can go to the BIOS.

I tested that HD on my current comp and it said I have to format it, which I did, then I reinstalled windows and all that crap yet again.


Now it's doing the same crap again. Oh and I'm also geting "Pri master hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. command failed, press F1 to resume".


Is the HD failing or something?

it's a 4 year old (I think) maxtor HD that doesn't have any important stuff in it.

SMART technology

Your error means one of two things...
1. SMART actually did it's job and caught something, meaning the drive is bad, yet it just kinda fucked itself up in the process.
2. The Firmware calls to the SMART software on the negative tracks of the HD which is now corrupt... which may or may not mean the drive is bad.

Only way to really find out is to go into the BIOS, turn SMART checking off, and that will let you boot... which you should then be booting into a startup disk of Maxtor's latest diagnostics software that's compatible with that drive. Should be able to find it on their website.

If that says your HD is fucked, time for a new one.
