Default C: Drive fills up for no apparent reason

It's been a while since I last posted on this forum, and I'll make my entry with a help request.

    System spec:
XP Home, Napa platform (ICH-7M) notebook.
    Fujitsu MHV2100BH SATA HDD
    NTFS, Cluster Size = 512.

3-4 days ago, out of the blue, my C: drive suddenly fills up for no reason. I was just browsing stuff when suddenly I started getting Low Disk Space warning pop ups. I double checked in Explorer, sure enough, I've got ~600MB left on the disk.

The problem is, I'm pretty sure I have a lot more than 600MB left. I have a habit of having at least 20GB of free space on my main Windows drive. To make matters worse, disk space decreases in a matter of seconds, and eventually it reached ground zero. Zero bytes.

I thought there must be something writing files to the disk, but I checked everything, and all was good. I checked my shared folders, all normal. Avast! (which checks for updates about once every 2-3 days or so) doesn't report anything. So I started freaking out for a sec, then I've got no choice but to restart. So I did.

Thankfully after the restart, free space is back up to about 37GB (which is what I'd expect). However, as time passes by, even this started to decrease. As it got down to about ~24GB, I knew something was wrong, but what? I checked pagefile settings, all good (max pagefile set to about 1.5GB), checked pagefile.sys for file size, all good.

So I ran chkdsk (in read-only mode). Sure enough it found errors. So I set chkdsk to run at boot time, which it did, and it did find and repaired some errors, and reboot.

But the same thing keeps happening. I would start windows with the correct amount of free space and it'd keep going down.

So I tried using the Recovery Console on an XP CD, and ran chkdsk /p /r from there, and again it reported that it found errors and fixed it. But the same thing still happens.

I don't want to resort to reformatting my drive and reinstall XP. Any suggestions?

    Thanks...

Edit: Here's the output from CHKDSK running in cmd.exe under normal Windows (not in safe mode or anything):

    [code]
    C:\>CHKDSK C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is Local Disk.

Aw hell... chkdsk isn't completing... that's not good homes.

First things first, if you got any data on there you want/need, try and get it backed up. I don't think you'll come out of this clean if chkdsk tells you to piss off.

Also, sadly I can't find a Diagnostics program for Fujutsu off of SATA.
Unless you got a copy of Spinrite laying around, you can try this, but it's not official... who knows if it will give anything accurate or cause any harm. Don't know... you can try it if you wish.
    HDDGURU: MHDD

Sounds like the disk is going bad, but some research says it could also be some kind of pointer problem. You can try unplugging the box, pressing the power switch, and clearing the power to the computer completely. Then plug it back in, start it up, and run your chkdsk /f /r /v again (or however you prefer to do it).

Damn that looks bad. File 25 is part of the Master File Table. It kinda stores where each and every file is... I'm surprised you can manipulate any files at all on that partition.

I don't know. Sounds to me like you should be able to either fix it with chkdsk /f /r /v, or you are boned and need a full format at the least, and worst case replace the drive.

I don't know. Maybe someone else has seen this before and knows a fix. I can't find anything and have never run across something that specific in badness.

seen something similar to this before guy. Try getting the most recent bios update for your system and run it. should clear up the problem, if not, then hasta lavista baby, gonna have to save what you can and format. better yet contact the drive manufacture and see if you can get a copy of their LOW Level format. this reestablishes the original factory format timing and scynic hash marks(a preformat, this is not a dos/windows partician) this preps the drive locks out any bad segments your ready for dos/windows format and install. if this low level format is damaged it gives incorrect info the system bios which updates itself thinking the drive is getting smaller and less space available.

I'm using a uni com right now, but when I get home I'll run CHKDSK under the recovery console and post the output of that. Doing some research on MS's Knowledge Base, there's a post about a problem similar to mine.

    KB 315688 and KB 303079.

@Vol, At this stage Windows hasn't complained about anything yet, no corrupted files or whatever. However, it looks like the MFT is having obsolete / invalid entries for some reason and is marking empty space as being used (hence chkdsk removing indexes). Since it hasn't affected the MFT entirely, I can still manipulate files normally. That's my theory for now anyway. I'll start making backups ASAP. Is there any way to reconstruct the MFT?

I'll check out MHDD and use it as a diagnostic tool. Worst case scenario is completely restoring the system. I'm hoping here that my recovery partition is still good. It's on the same drive (heck, it came with the laptop)

As for completely taking out power.. It's not hard, but taking out the BIOS battery is a problem. It's a laptop.

    @Robotek
Luckily I've still got my BIOS update CD. I'll try that out as well.

bios battery shouldn't be necessary to attempt that method. I don't know any way to reconstruct the MFT, sadly. I'm out of ideas on this one.

    OMG it's like 4.45AM..

OK the good news is it looks like I don't have to get a new drive. I looked around and found TestDisk, which is able to restore MFT from its mirror or vice versa.

To make things easier, I got hold of BartPE, and made a bootable CD out of my Windows installation. I'm getting some interesting output.

First off, chkdsk at the recovery console: [image link]

TestDisk under normal Windows: MFT and MFT Mirror are different. Repairing MFT from the mirror is useless because everytime I check back, it keeps telling me they're different.

chkdsk /r under BartPE: Detected problems, fixed it, no more problems.

    [restart, at recovery console again]
chkdsk at recovery console still showing the same "CHKDSK found a problem and repaired the disk" message everytime it's run.

    [restart, under BartPE]
TestDisk under BartPE: Found MFT and MFT mirror mismatch, fixed MFT from MFT mirror. MFT and MFT mirror are now identical.
Subsequen runs of TestDisk consistently reports matched MFTs

chkdsk under BartPE: no problems found.
Subsequent runs of chkdsk returns consistently good results.

    [restart, at recovery console]
chkdsk under recovery console: same behaviour, problems found and repaired it each time it runs.

    [restart, boot to normal Windows]
chkdsk under normal Windows: found the same errors as in my first post.
Disk space under Explorer keeps decreasing.

So basically, everything works perfectly under BartPE, but somehow under the Recovery Console (in which I use an XP install CD) and normal/safe mode XP environment, things start to go haywire again, even though I manage to fix everything under BartPE.

At least now I'm having a good reason to safely assume that some drivers or Windows is causing the problem. What that is.. no idea. I thought it was NTFS.SYS, but replaced that with a copy from the I386 folder (using BartPE) and still getting no difference.

Oh, and one more thing, free disk space in BartPE (reported by chkdsk and the file manager there) is good and consistent every time at 41.3 GB, but not at the recovery console (reported by chkdsk). I've also managed to get hold of Raxco PerfectDisk 8.0. I'll try to defragment the drive using that.

    What the fuck?

That's weird... hum... try booting into safe mode and run chkntfs /x C:
That will turn off automatic checking of the disk for C:
After that start windows normally, restart again, go to safemode, and then run chkntfs /d
That will set disk checking back to default.

Saving that, you might try cleaning the registry with CCleaner or something. Maybe after that and a reboot try using PageDefrag from sysinternals to defrag the registry and the page file.

All of this is probably not going to work... I don't see why it should work. But hey, try some stupid shit... might solve a stupid problem. :\

    Talking about pagefile...

You know windows somehow might screwed on calculations and determined that the remaining free space of your HD shall be used as VM..
That would explain that while you use your remaining space decreases.

So, also try disabling Pagefile all together..
    defrag
    checkdsk
re enable pagefile, but manually set it to 1.5x your total physical ram..
see if you still have problems

My HD is also with 300mb free.. but thats because of hentai.. easily fixable=p
