Whenever I unplugged the modem cable it got restarted immediately.
then I can't open the drives normally directly(have to use Windows+E).
and then in the safely remove hardware icon, there's a safely remove harddisk.
It took waaayyyyy longer to open my folder(my folder is 20GB++ on 40GB drive).

Sounds like either a lot of problems, or one particularly good virus. Run a set of virus/adware scans first.

Next thing I'd do is go to the system properties, go to the hardware tab, click device manager, and see if there are any red x's, yellow !'s... anything that looks wrong.

While you're in there, check the properties of the primary and secondary drive controllers and make sure they are set to DMA mode, and not PIO.

Also, turn off automatic restart on system failure. See here:
Windows XP Shut Down and Automatic Reboot Problems
That way you will know why, via error codes that you can google (write down the message at the top and the stop code at the bottom at the blue screen).
Next thing I would try is running a scan for hard disk errors. You can do that from the context menu of right-clicking the drive, or it's in the properties of the drive (don't remember off the top of my head). That will occure on restart when you do that (good old chkdsk).

scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!
Might try that to see if you have any fucked up system files, but I somehow doubt that'll help.

Other than that... I... don't think I have anything else to repair that off the top of my head. :S

    thanks to Silverwmoon!
