I'd like to upgrade the RAM in my computer from 1Gb to 2Gb.
Currently I have a Dell Dimension E510 with 2 512Mb sticks.
I want to buy 2 1GBs, should I buy them from dell?
I don't know if there are different types of RAM other than by size.
Can someone recommend me some RAM that's compatible with my machine?
I also don't know what kind of mother board I have.
I found a program that tells me what kind of mother Board I have and what kind a RAM it uses, I think.
Bus Type Dual DDR2 SDRAM
Bus Width 128-bit
DRAM:FSB Ratio 8:6
I think i figured it out, its 240pins.
You need to identify the speed. It should be a Megahertz rating. That way you can buy dual channel ram at the speed you need (or a higher speed ram with the ability to clock down). For example... uhh... PC2-5300 is DDR2 240pin DIMM that runs at 667MHz. So you know it's 240pins, you know it's DDR2, so you need PC2... now you have to find the MHz so that you can match the speed to the number.
And yes... it's probably cheaper to get it on sale yourself at Best Buy or something than it would be from Dell.
That's a pretty good up to date diagnostic utility. Should tell you what you need to know.
Might also read that, or google 'How to buy memory'.
Do what I did right before christmas. Go to www.crucial.com and hit the system scan button on the front page. Its 100% safe and will tell you everything about your current RAM and give you a number of choices for upgrading. I bought 2 gigabytes from them and it was cheap and got to me fast. Buying direct from the manufacturer is great.
Yeah thanks for all the info guys, I finally figured it out after reading some articles from the dell support forums.
