Hard Drive problems
Hi guys, I was working on a paper last night and had it saved on another computer. However just this morning, It just goes into a rebooting loop. I was wondering if it was possible to install the Hard drive of that computer onto another computer and retrieve just that one file. I need that file by tonight, so if you have any suggestions on retrieving the file, please post it here.
yes, it is possible. Just slap it in, and make it a secondary drive.
Another, easier thing to do is get a new Knoppix disk and boot off that instead of your hard drive, mount the partition your file is on, mount a flash drive, transfer, unmount everything, turn the computer off, take your file somewhere else to work on it.
Also be warned about slapping the HD into another computer... it's possible your computer has some kind of virus, so you may be infecting another computer by transfering... not entirely likely it will transfer given the nature of most viruses written to exploit windows systems now, but the possibility is there.
thanks to Silverwmoon!
You could try Knoppix as Volvo said, but I think it's easier with Helix Forensics once you're booted up, there is an icon in your desktop that looks like a hard drive double click on it, look for your file on just copy it to a usb drive.
