    Default Computer wont start up

    (writing this on friends computer)

Well, I was in the middle of transferring files from my computer to my external hard drive, when my computer suddenly freezes on me. I wait for a good five minutes to see if it fixes itself but alas, it didnt. When I shut it off and turn it back on, it will freeze at the windows XP logo. I try going on safe mode, but I can't even start that up.

So I sort of came up with two options

    1.) restart my entire computer.

    2.) buy a new one.

Now if I have to do option one, is there anyway to at least get to my files and transfer them thru to my ex harddrive first?

Or if I have to go option 2, what computer would you guys recommend for around $1500? I would prefer a labtop that can play games pretty well. i don't expect to get a top of the line gaming labtop but I would like the best I can get with a cheap $1500. I plan to get a desktop gaming computer later in the future, so thats what my money is saving up for.

Were you trying to cut and paste your C: drive into your external hard drive by any chance? o_0

The only way I can see for you to be able to back up the files from your computer before you format it would be to take the HDD out of your computer and stick it in that external HDD enclosure, and plug it into another computer and downloading the files that way.

There is no reason to buy a new computer to solve this problem, that would be a huge waste of money (unless you were thinking of upgrading before you encountered this problem).

Can you list your OS? System specs? Programs running at the time?

if only windows is screwed up you can put a linux live cd, boot on it and use it to save all the files you need on your external HDD if you want. In the process, you can then format your disk and install linux

    Hahaha. Nice Shau.

This ain't a huge problem. Tons of things you can try. Best thing to do would be to step through the boot up, identify the problem file, and then reload it from the XP disk with the recovery console. Kinda tricky though...

Before reformatting try to repair the install (throw the XP cd in and let it run... should come up and tell you you already have XP installed, and that you can repair the install... I think... been a while).

As far as saving your data, listen to shautieh... any linux live disk now will allow you to mount your NTFS partition and pull your data off of it (and get this... WITHOUT CRASHING!). XD
    Vol~

Finally got my computer back and running yesterday. Thanks for the help you guys.

I actually took my computer to my friend who is pretty good with this kind of stuff. With my computer illiteracy I pretty got the part that there is a corrupt file in my hard drive or something that couldn't start my comp back up. So he told me to put in my windows cd thingy and we got it fixed after about three days with tinkering with it.

I backed up all my files into my ex hard drive just incase this happens again. but for the time being, I think its time to buy a new computer so i can actually play Hellgate London thats coming out in the end of this month.

On that note, I got a XP Live Disk from a friend. One geek to another, you want me to send you an .iso of it?
