    Default Folder View Problems

Eh, I know the title's bad, but I can't think of any way to describe this problem.

I'm using Windows XP - maybe the Media Edition. I usually keep lots of folders open (from the main drive, not My Documents), except this morning, things were a little unusual. While everything was fine initally, like when I turned on the computer and all that, things changed when I tried to open another window not too long after (half an hour, maybe?). The side bar with the tasks is missing, none of the icons next to the links from the Start Menu are there, and I can't view anything as a filmstrip anymore; the option simply isn't there. I don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary, or clicking anything unusual, so I can't understand what would have caused this.

Is there any way I can get those options back? I need the filmstrip view especially for reading manga...

Also, strangely enough, the BitComet icon disappeared from the bottom taskbar thing, except I didn't turn it off. I reopened it, and when I minimized it again, it disappeared...

    A screen shot would help.

Are you missing menu bar (file, edit, view, etc tabs)? the standard buttons (navigations, search, views, etc)? or the side bar tasks?

For side bar task, there is an option that can hide it, make sure it is checked to enable the side bar task. Go to START, right click MY COMPUTER, go to properties, advanced tab, performance settings, make sure "use common tasks in folder" is checked.

I'm missing that blue sidebar that usually has things like "file and folder options" - I wish I could say more, but I've forgotten what they have. I also don't have the view as filmstrip option anymore; that's just gone.

That option is checked, and it always has been, as far as I know.

I can't upload a screenshot since I can only save them in Paint, and the bitmap file is too big to host anywhere (unless you don't mind downloading it from Sendspace or whatever).

    It's the common task bar.
    try this,
on Windows explorer, click tools, folder options, on the general tab, make sure "Show common tasks in folders" is checked.
There are other things that make this bar disappear, if you resize the windows too small or you accidentally press the folders view button (standard buttons).

You can always change the view option using the view button (standard buttons) without having to use the common tasks. Or the view tab (menu bar).

    Save it as JPEG then.

Or PNG (although Paint's PNG isn't that good).

And... umm... lets try to make a list of your issues, shall we?

    1. You open a lot of windows... err... or only one window and go through a lot of sub-directories?
Either way, it doesn't matter. In my experience, the only difference between opening explorer, My Computer, and My Documents is the folder view preferences. So try copying a folder of manga into some subdirectory off of My Documents, then open My Documents, go to the subdirectory, and see if you can set view preferences for it.

    2. The Sidebar is gone. This happened when you tried to open a window. What did you open?
Well flash pretty much answered that one, but I want to know what you opened.

    3. Icon's of the Start Menu are gone.
Ohhhhkaaaaaay.... fucking weird. Not sure about this one yet.

    4. Taskbar icon(s) disapeared.
Ok, easy enough. I assume you mean system tray, not taskbar. Right click the taskbar, go to Properties, on the Taskbar tab, check 'Hide Inactive Icons', then push the customize button. Find Bitcommet and change it to 'Always Show'.
If it is the taskbar... well then maybe it's an option within bitcommit. Dive into Bitcommet's options.

    5. Filmstrip view gone.
    Oooooohkaaaaaaaaay, again, fucking weird.
    EDIT:
Ok, I got this one... if the System Restore doesn't work, then what you have to do is change the folder type of the folders you want filmstrip into a picture type folder. To do this, right click on it, select properties, and go to the customize tab.
I'll bet your ass though (your's, not mine... because I'm a prick like that) that you don't have a customize tab anymore. If that's the case, this should take care of that.

Is that everything? Did I get something wrong?

Well, honestly, if you have one, I'd try system restoring back a few days if you can. If it doesn't work, you can always come back to the current settings. Also, run some adware/antivirus scans. This sounds like just a general case of windows fucking up for no god damn reason, but it's worth a shot.

How can it be not good? Does it contain all the colours? Yes. Is there lossy compression like JPEG? Hell no, that's PNG for you. Is it interlaced? Who gives a fuck, it looks the same anyway.

So how is the PNG not good?

I'd REALLY rather not try System Restore - I did that once, when I accidentally deleted my sound card, and it really fucked everything up for me. I had to take it to someone to get it fixed, since Windows stopped working and I no longer had room to reinstall it. If there's another way...

Here's an example of my manga folder. Usually it has that blue sidebar, but it doesn't anymore.

I don't have a subdirectory problem, as far as I know. I go through a lot because I organize my folders into subfolders and all that, but the same problem is on all of those. No matter where I've looked, the filmstrip option is gone - even in folders that haven't been modified and previously had it. It just isn't there anymore, on anything.

I tried the system tray thing (yeah, I meant that), and it didn't work - Bitcomet still isn't there. This isn't a problem I've had before, either; in fact, none of my icons are there (I tried it with Limewire too). It seems to be related to whatever is going on with my folders.

As for the final thing, I DO have a customize tab, and it's set on photo album. I just don't have filmstrip like I used to.

Edit: By the way, here's what I mean about the disappearing icons.

The Filmstrip option only appear if you set your folder to "Pictures" in the Customize Tab

Right click on the folder that you keep all the mangas, go to properties. Tab Customize( If the tab is not there follow Volvogga's post #5)

Then select "Pictures (may be best for most files)"
And make sure "[ ] Also apply this template for all subfolders" is checker

Hit ok, might process some stuff, but the "FilmStrip" option will come back.

Now the bar, the bar that Digital is mentioning is like the Navigation Pane, the one on the left hand of the explorer window?
"Chile is a thin and tall country"

My folders are set on photo albums, and they always have been. As I said, this has happened with folders that have previously had filmstrip available, and were actually using that as the default. Why it's gone, I have no idea.

EDIT: Okay, I got filmstrip back, and... it's fucked. I mean, it's basically thumbnails, except on one line and with scrolling. There used to be a preview of the photos, where I could see things perfectly (that's how I read manga), but that isn't there anymore.
