Question Problem Downloading Files Completely on Windows XP

I'm having problems downloading files off the internet on Windows XP. (I have dial-up, if that makes any difference.) For example, I'll be downloading something and it'll stop at 30% or 50% and then the download window will say 'Download Complete'. I go to the desktop, and of course, the zip file is empty. The internet hasn't even disconnected itself or anything.

This has happened to me downloading off of a few different websites, including StopTazmo. Also, I thought it was something wrong with my FireFox browser, so I tried switching to the AOL (Ick.) browser. It also did the same thing on AOL- The file stops at 30% and corrupts.

    Thanks in advance.

AOL is just IE with a different shell. IE's download manager isn't very good. Firefox's is slightly better. It's a matter of losing the connection to the server and the download manager saying 'oop, must be done'.

The first thing to try is instead of just clicking the file and letting it save, right click the file you want and click Save As. This is generally more reliable (don't ask me why), and it has helped many people successfully download from this site. Some sites use special php scripts to download, and this trick won't work on them, but it's always worth a shot. Sites like Sourceforge give you a link for 'if you download doesn't start, click here'. On those sites, just cancel the download when it comes up, then use the Save As trick on that extra link.

    For a last resort...
There are 3rd party download managers. For windows, that works well with both firefox and IE, I'd reccomend Free Download Manager (note that for Firefox, you MIGHT need Flashgot extention). FDM is also a download ACCELERATOR. These work by making multiple connections to the server and downloading different pieces of the file at the same time. It doesn't really help on dial-up, but on broadband, it speeds things up considerably.

However, note that MANY sites do not like download accelerators. StopTazmo is one of those sites. It's hard on the server's processor, and this site is just not big enough to handle it. If you are detected using one, there is a script that will punish you with a block (at least there used to be). So, to use FDM with ST, you will have to set it to make only ONE connection at a time to ST's severs. It's not hard to do, yet if you can not properly configure FDM to do this, please do not use it at this site.

Could it just be that he's getting timed out before the downloads finish?

~ Happens to me a lot when I'm downloading... stuff.

Yeah, I knew that about AOL using IE. Ick. I hate IE, but I was desperate...

Thank you so much. This conquered the problem. Thank you! <3

you just... you know what... go to the help section if you want to talk about downloading off ST like your supposed too. This question was a generic question. But the problem has to do with shitty push through his connection.

    In anycase... locked.
