Default Apple Problem

my friend has a problem loading his os (Mac OSX 3.4). when he restarted his computer it freezes when his login window is supposed to load, and never reaches it. Any suggestions about how he can fix it?

oh god, this will be fun. Also, I assume you mean version 10.3.4.

In any case, it hangs here right? "Login Window Starting..."

Anyway, there should be a way to boot into council (command prompt). I hope you know your unix commands. Hum... better try and walk you through this (what little I can with OSX >< ).

Boot it up to the council and then you need to make the USB directory.
mkdir /Volumes/TempUSBDrive
Oh, and don't forget that REAL computing environments are case sensitive.
Anyway... plug the USB drive in. Now we need to figgure out what disk the fucker is... ummm... how to do this on a Mac?

Ah, I know. Before plugging the drive in, run this command:
ls /dev/disk*
Now plug the drive in and run that command again. You should get a new entry from before. That new entry is the USB drive.

Once you know that, you mount the USB drive.
/sbin/mount -t vfat /dev/disk# /Volumes/TempUSBDrive
Where # is the disk number.

Hokay... so... next run this for me (assuming the mount worked).
cp /Library/Logs/Console/$USER/console.log /Volumes/TempUSBDrive/

    cp /var/log/system.log /Volumes/TempUSBDrive/
$USER is probably a parameter, so rather than $USER, you'll probably have to know your login name... admin name... w/e it is on OS X.

NOW THIS IS VERY FUCKING IMPORTANT!
You must unmount the USB drive. To do this...
umount /Volumes/TempUSBDrive
if that doesn't work, try
umount /dev/disk#
You must unmount the drive, or risk trashing the file system.

    EDIT:
    Oh shit, almost forgot...
rmdir /Volumes/TempUSBDrive
hehehe ^^;;
    /EDIT

once that's done, pull the drive and upload those logs. I'll see if I can read them. From what I've read so far your problem should be identified in those logs.

Just a unrelated question about the apple computers. Is the apple OS system a good OS system?

Linux is good too, though you won't experience the same thing depending on which distro you chose and etc.

But anyway, if you wanna talk about that you better start a new thread

Nope, I am good. Just had a question about the apple, and how good it was. Does the Core 2 Duo make the apple OS event better?
