    Default External/portable harddrive help

Need help in purchasing a new external harddrive and I really can't be bothered to go and get an internal one, since I want one that's easy to remove.

Anyways, I'm tossing up between these two:

A Western digital 160gb passport portable hdd $199 AUD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136059 (yes, i know the link aint to the 160gb one, jus putting this up as reference since they all look the same)

    AND

A Western Digital 500gb My Book external hdd $278 AUD
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136030

The main goal is to essentially remove my shit from the comp's regular hdd. Although if I get the passport, it's easier to steal bandwidth from university either by using a laptop or by using the uni comps, whereas if I get the my book, all I'd really do is dump everything I have on there and not have to worry about space for a while, and I'd leave the stealing of bandwidth to my trusty usb stick.

Please reply quickly. These prices'll only last for 5 more days, and the passport'll go back up to $300 AUD and the my book'll get close to $400-$500 AUD again.

Both have good reviews. Honestly I think the only factor to consider is the portability. The external is not portable hardly at all. The Passport is. So it's whatever you decide.

Personaly, I'd go for storage space and get the straight external. How much can you really rape from your school's connection in the short time your there that a 1 gig stick can't handle?
    Vol~

    thanks to Silverwmoon!

I'd rather get a standard hard drive in an enclosure.

Well, unless I was really bothered, I'd probably 'just' fill an empty 1gb drive, so I probably can't rape it that bad unless I get a laptop.

Yes, I suppose I *could* get both, though I'm trying to cut down on spending, since there's a whole bunch of crap I'm saving up for. I guess the whole point of my considering the passport is to edit my playlists on the go as well as taking all my crap with me for quick access when I need it.

I can't believe that one slipped my mind. =_=

Although... the WD hdds in my area combined with an enclosure are about the same price in total or a little more expensive than the WD i put the link to by about $4 or $5.

Time to reconsider these things then. =_=

In any case, I've decided to go for the mybook rather than the passport in this time. I'll just wait until I get a laptop and use that as a portable hdd of sorts.

Also, (off-topic though since it's my thread... =P) what would you guys recommend for a motherboard, soundcard, cooling fans and PSUs (the last two I'd like to be ultra silent btw)?

If possible, can someone also change the title to 'computer hardware dilemma' please? I figure I may as well get hardware recommendations using this thread as opposed to making a completely new one. Unless, of course, it aint possible, then I'll just go and make a new one.

What size case do you have? As I see it, that really matters.

For example, if you have a huge case, the PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703008) I have is amazing, however, it barely fit in my Thermaltake Armor. What size case are you talking about?

Remove the top part of your Armor (the USB ports), the fan bracket thing and the front bay parts then insert it from the front. There, easy as pie.
I installed an Enermax Galaxy in mine that way and the Galaxy is humongously ridiculously long.

True. However, as I was replacing the PSU, and already had all my stuff installed, I had to remove the top part of the Armor, the fan bracket, try to angle it in the case, and utterly fail.

Then I had to remove the CPU cooler, remove the the other side panel(without the glass), and thread it up diagonally through the back. Of course, the clamp that came with the case also wouldn't fit, but no huge loss there. Total time: ~1 hour.

Tough boss... ride him too hard and you'll get your boots covered in thermal paste though. Not just the standard run of the mill gunk, the really flashy stuff. The one with the shiny gold metalflake in it. :P

Actually, I'm trying to get recommendations for hardware since one of the things I'm saving up for is a new desktop comp. Forgive my noobiness for not even taking the size of the case into account. =_=

    I figured if I can at least get recommendations for those four, I can more or less work my way around from there. Being a complete nub at building a pc, I mistakenly assumed that all pc cases are the same size... ;_;
