... well, you could google it, but I happen to know off the top of my head.

A hub is a device that allows one device to communicate to multiple network devices by cat5/5e/6 cable.

A switch is an intelegent hub. When you send data to a hub, it sends the data to every device on the network, and the devices that don't need it just ignore the data. A switch will send the data to only those devices it's intended for. A switch is better, and about the same price as most hubs now.

A router is for connecting one network to another. This is usually done by going from a home network, to the router, to a cable/DSL modem. It's like a pathway for every part of your network to go out to the internet. Some modems are modem/router combos, so if you have a cable/DSL modem, read the manual and see if there are home network solutions made for it.

Just to but in alittle from what Volvogga said Hubs and Switches are used in networks topologies such as Star,Star Mesh,Bus and something eles. There are correct ways using hubs and switches using the topologies but if you use them wrong the packets that are being sended could crash.

aww, dude... that's true, but you don't want to fuck with anything but star. Some of the others are cheeper, but star is the way to go.

If I had to do another, I'd use tolken ring. Mesh is a cording nightmare, and bus requires termination. Star is standard, so use that. XD
