    Default PC screwed

Model- Hp 753d, those that have system restore so they come without discs
Problem: Accidentally deleted quite a number of important files and replaced hal.dll (they call it hal32.dll) in system32. Now cant startup , pressing f10 gives a invalid boot.ini so i cant reformat. Im screwed, anyone?

Yeah, I'm sure you can get a disk from somewhere... in this case I would even say to download one because you FUCKING NEED A DISK!

The right thing to do is to call HP, tell them the compie is screwed and you need the disk... They should send you a new one, but from what I've heard about HP, they tend to send out some recovery disk... not the XP install CD. So give them a call, tell them that you need an install disk and NOT A RECOVERY DISK. If they say no, or send you the wrong one... tell them next computer is going to be a dell, then just download a XP disk (make sure you get the one that matches your install... if it's home, find home... pro, find pro... media, find media.)

These hardware companies are pissing me off. I had to make my own (found the image maker burried in the Start menu on my Dell Laptop). It's fucking rediculous.

Meh... anyway, after you have a disk, either by calling HP, downloading, or borrowing (and copying it in case of later need) from a friend, follow these instructions...

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

I had to do something similar to these instructions once for a friend... he had a few hundred viruses... I got the thing to start up, but had to give it a new shell and a new file manager to run it. Thing was totaly shot... meh, got him through the week untill he could reinstall.
    Vol~
