Default LINUX - some questions :p

i am experiencing some problem with beryl and swing applications and know that the 2 have some difficulties to work together, but if someone knows a tweak to make the 2 work nicely, it would be great
(my swing applications appear blank unless i go back to metacity)

i use ubuntu and gnome btw.

my other problem is that i would like to use starUML from linux, but it doesn't work with wine (it's meant for windows)
i've tried some workarounds seen on different obscures forums, but still wasn't able to make it work

i'm not sure if someone will be able to help me here, but i'm asking just in case
thanks

Which Ubuntu. Forgive me, but being a fedora man, I forget the difference. There is supposedly a patch for Dapper, but not Edgy.

So, it's a generaly XGL problem. I've seen two solutions so far... neither of them that great.
First is to use a tool manger or something like that called xnest or xephyr and write a custom start script for each and every f****'n program. I wouldn't want to do it, but if you want to... here you go.

*beurk*
Other way is to edit /etc/enviornment and add this line in.
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
That should make it work, but not everything will draw right away, supposedly... you might have to resize once in a while, then it will show up.

I read some developer's log about identifying the session to load up something or other on command... apparently an easy fix, save for the identification is a pain in the ass. Untill they get the patch working, you'll have to leave the variable in.

Hope that works. I've got some coding to do before tomorrow, so I'll get on the other problem after that's done.

Good luck... and check back for an edit in a day (tops), or a new post if you reply before I get to it.

Edit:
Ok, I'm not finding a lot. So far all I got is there is a whole slew of developer tools for linux and UML... so in the meantime, give one of them a try. Umbrello seems to be one of the most famous... there is a plugin for Netbeans to use it (IDE pack or something)... Graphor doesn't look as snazzy, but it seems to be a GNOME product (which I'll reserve my judgement on )... and BOUML looks like it's workable too.

Honestly, I have no idea what the hell UML is... looks weird to me. There are enough languages out there and I don't want to screw with another... I look a little more though.

EDIT2:
Try this...

hehe thanks

for compiz, i should have been more precise but i have edgy with aiglx (not XGL)
i'll try the "AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit" and tell you later if it works or not
edit : it seems to work fine !!!
at least i can create and see swing windows ! ^^
thanks

for UML : i tried umbrello before and didn't like it
i thought bouml was a dead project, but while verifying it it seems it's quite lively (last update was 9 days ago) => i'll try it ^^

NB : if you have to work in UML someday, don't use poseidon ! it's too slow and i lost a part of my work while i was saving it (it crashed)

for the second edit about staruml, i had seen this link when i searched the web yesterday, but couldn't make it to work...
i had the same error, ie :
err:module:import_dll Library MFC42.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\\Program
Files\\StarUML\\Pgmr101.ocx") not found
but was unable to find this MFC42.DLL in my system32 dyrectory (i have one that look alike, MFC42FRA.DLL or something... and i guess that i need the english DLL ..? (it doesn't work if i just rename it ^^"))

i doubt bouml is as good as staruml, so i'd really like to make it work on linux too

ps : what languages are you studying atm ??
ps2 : UML is not really a language, it is used to modelize a problem to facilitate (well, it's supposed to) the coding
