Could the problem be that the ATI try icon for the Catalyst drivers is just not loading at system startup? Should be possible to load the Catalyst Control Panel manually from the installed ATI files on your hard drive and somewhere in the settings I believe there's a "show tray icon" option that can be turned on or off. The alternative might be to download the latest Catalyst drivers from the ATI web site that work with your graphics card, uninstall your current ATI drivers, and then install the new one you downloaded.

The graphics accelerator is a combination of graphics layer, divice driver, and the hardware on the graphics card. It's rare for the layer and hardware to fail, so that means it's a driver file. In other words... exactly what was suggested and what you did is the solution.

The driver makes the card run from within windows. You have every right to be able to update and download it if it's missing or corrupt. You already paid for it when you bought the card. Any driver can basicly be downloaded for free.

(except the fucking 56k Linux winmodem driver for whatever fucking chip I got in this laptop... fucking bastards... oh, and serial digitizer tablet drivers... bastards again).

I hated the 56k winmodem when it came out. Tried one back when I was still using dialup, didn't like it at all because I'd get random disconnects when connecting to anyone with a Supra modem, and bought an external USR Courier V. Everything instead.

A winmodem (AKA softmodem) is a modem without a uart chip. Basicly it's like a orgamism without a brain. Relies on the processor to do all the thinking. Sucks huge ****.

The US Robotics that RFB mentioned is a real modem... has it's own controlers and such in it. Runs itself and is far better than the shit that comes prepackaged with your run of the mill systems today.

At home I have a 56K Best Data external serial modem (that's right... com fucking 2 bitches)... runs like a champ.

Hum... best thing to do is take a class on basic computing that includes hardware information. You won't get a whole lot out of it, but a basic understanding would come.

An computer repair (I suggest one of A+ training) would be best... but untill then read through the threads here with this link in mind. It'll help you with your understanding... somewhat.

Glossery of Computer, Telephony, and http://www.csgnetwork.com/glossarym.html

    EDIT:
OH!... and your local library. Never forget or underestimate that place. As my father told me when I was 3 or 4... once you know how to read, you can learn anything you want.
