Firefox 2.0 is out!
One week and a day after IE 7 is released, Firefox 2.0 steps up to the dartboard. Three words:
So lets see what we got. This isn't a complete rework like IE 7 was (supposedly), so I shouldn't have that much to include in my new features list. It's a .5 release, so it's not much more of an upgrade than 1.5 was from 1. Ok, lets see what we got.
UI Update: On the outside it doesn't look that different, but start diving into the menues and you'll find they changed quite a bit. Combining themes and extentions into one menu is one noticable change. The list of tabs on the left side is another. Enough to be a nice change, but not enough to make you go HOLY SHIT... but then again, no one is pissed about it either.
Phishing Protection: Kind of self-explanitory, but basicly it downloads a list off the server of Firefox (or you can set it to ask Google instead) of sites that are trying to screw you and alerts you to this fact. Kinda like ad-block extention.
Search Engines: The search engine bar has been redone. Adding and deleting are now easier, and you can also re-organize them all to whatever order you chose. The big one's liek Google and Yahoo now also offer suggestions as you type (Interesting what commes up as you try to search for 'big tiles').
Tabs: A close for every tab now, a scroller if you have too many open, and a history menu for recently closed tabs.
Session Resume: Accedently close... no prob. Open the thing up and all your tabs come back to you. Makes updating a breeze. No more waiting till your done, or putting a bunch of tabs in temporary bookmark.
Inline Spell Checking: Can we make FF mandatory on ST for this reason... no? Fuck. Ah well. Any web form you have, FF will spell check for you as you type. Fucking awsome.
Bunch of Nitche Improvements: Lots of stuff for the power and nitche users. RSS feed stuff and some enhancements/fixes here and there. I like the SVG:Text thing... glad their supporting more of SVG.
Lets see... things I've noticed...
As always, you have to worry about the extention and theme writers keeping up. I lost 4 extentions and 1 theme. Nice thing is Firefox keeps track of them now and will continue to look and see if any updates arise for them.
Other thing is I'm a big fan of the type:search. They still have it, but just typing brings up a quick search now. You have to use ctrl+f to use the full page search. Ctrl+G still works in the quick search though. Still... I'm kinda dissapointed in that.
Other than that... it's really the same that you'd expect from firefox. Not much has changed. A few new features and a few gripes of old addressed.
My opinion: Rock solid and what I'd expect. Makes me happy. Here is the benchmark IE, and you have to jump higher.
thanks to Silverwmoon!
beautiful... i lost almost every theme i had and the one i was using (Brushed 2.0 i think) the spell checker is instantly noticeable lol and should prove useful (since when is lol not a word XO ) the google (<< not a word XO (<< not a word XO )) toolbar (<< not a word XO ) is back which makes me angry i just installed the Groowe (<< not a word XO ) Add-On a week ago...
i wish they made the bookmark toolbar a horizontal scrolling bar instead of a drop down menu, that would be truly revolutionary.
thanks for the heads up vol.
I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

Bah, it's not really stable after hours of use while IE7 is still running fine.
FF2.0 was using about 700MB of RAM just before it crashed too.
700mbs of ram?..................
i think ill stick to IE7
"Don't judge it!!!!"
Well don't consider the use of 700MB by FF on my PC to be a bad thing since everything seems to be eating more RAM than what they should on my computer.
I guess that's one bad thing of having 4GB of RAM.
But my PC boots into Windows XP less than a second into the boot screen with the Windows XP logo.
>.> soooo 4gbs of ram could suck ur ram uP? or is it just like that on your compu?
"Don't judge it!!!!"
You bet your ass it can. The more memory you slap in, the more windows and it's various apps just take for themselves. If you have less, they tend to try and limit it... although that means a bunch ends up in the virtual memory, but if it's a well written app, that's the stuff you don't need to call very often.
And damn Jyuu. Was that your working set at any given time or the peak working set? And what did you have open. The only time I've ever seen that is when I had a real shitty java applet running in the back ground.
I did a little stress test, and may have hurt something, that involved 5 windows and 120 to 150 tabs between them and could only push the peak working set up to 160 megs. I normally run between 50 and 70 megs... no matter how long it's up (well, ok, I'll take that back... it goes up around 120~150 after a week). Then again... I only have 512MB in this laptop.
Damn I need a gig chip.
thanks to Silverwmoon!
Strange, I've got 2GBs and it hasn't used more than 150MBs. I've been trying it since it was in Alpha(Bon Echo), and I must say it's really the best browser out there
not to try and hijack thread or anything but my windows sucks up more ram than it should at startup. i look in my task manager and its taking up 400mb out of my 2gb at startup. i dont even have to mention what it does afterwards. would a reformat fix things or should i run windows strip-down version (scared of what i might lose if i instal stripdown)
