Converting Video Formats
I need to convert a .mkv file to an .avi file or something I can work with on Windows Movie Maker (I'm planning on making a AMV). Can anyone suggest a way to do it through either VLC Media Player (I know VLC Media Player can convert videos, I just don't know how) or another free program that will do it?
Umm, a while ago I had the same problem when I wanted to convert my MKV to AVI so I could burn it onto a DVD.
I don't remember exactly how I managed it but I think I used VirtualDub following these instructions...this one is only for Matroska MKV files.
Good luck! Oh and BTW I ended up getting Nero 7 because it was a lot easier for me to use.
Edit: http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=268844 is another link on using "Mencoder" which is a lot more difficult to use I think.

You could try the program xilisoft video converter...that might help.

I can tell you, that guide works. Know from experience.
Also... fair warning. Nero 7 is a buggy mess. Just wait untill it decides to change your file icons all by itself for no reason. Just my opinion, and if it works for you, I'm happy for ya. As for me though, I am one more error away from removing the software completely and never looking at it again. I'll tell you one thing, I will NEVER buy version 8. That is how pissed I am.
I have found a lot of good programs for video (too many to name) that are free. Got the LightningUK software DVD Decrypter that burns Images wonderfully. Use VUPlayer for ripping CDs. My need for Nero is getting less and less. XD
Nero Vision is really nice and easy to use though.. if it works. Only thing it needs is the ability to add subs.
thanks to Silverwmoon!
Try using SUPER. That encodes .mkv to avi.
Get it here...
If that doesn't work, go to http://www.erightsoft.net and find SUPER that way.
Yeah, Nero 7 is kinda retarded. I wouldn't recommend anybody buying it but if you can get it somehow then sure go ahead...some of the programs don't even work even if you have bought the commercial version.
They claim that by downloading updates I'll be able to fix any bugs, etc. But, I can't even download updates in the first place because the downloader is a piece of ****.
