Your monitor doesn't support the refresh rate/resolution at which the game is being displayed.
How to solve it? Override the refresh rate settings in the game options if you can of if not, just do it at your video card's control panel.
What's your video card and monitor?

Well, like Jyuu said, the game is probably calling for a different video mode than what your monitor can handle. But if it comes up with that message, it can't be that old.

Get the manual out for it. If you don't have it, shame on you... and the next one you get, guard the manual with your life (nah, I'm picking on ya... but it is something that you should keep around, as the max rates for horizontal and vertical is something that you should always be aware of ). If you don't have it turn the thing around and take a look at the back. There should be a model number on there somewhere. Type the number into google, and see what it comes back with. If it comes back with crap, take another number string off the back and try that one. You should get a result back that will be your monitor eventually.

Anyway, you want to find the specs for it, so once you got the model of the monitor, google the model and specs... then set the game up according to the max resolution and refresh rate specified. If you can't find it or are not sure how to read a specification chart, post back your make and model of the monitor and someone can look it up and tell you something close to what you should set the game to play at.

    thanks to Silverwmoon!
