Umm... damn. Well, first thing is first, lets check your USB ports. Go to Start, Control Pannel, and if your on XP click the switch to classic view in the top left corner. Now click system. Next go to Hardware tab, and click Device Manager. From there scroll down and look for any yellow '!' marks. If you see one on your USB ports, then they are probably messed up... although, if you see one at all you should probably tell me. Take a screenshot (press PrntScrn key and paste it into Paint, save it, and upload it to Imageshack or someplace if you do run accross one).

Check that and get back to me. I'll look further into it if that turns up null.

The yellow ! means there is a problem. Most likely the driver isn't installed right. Try to reinstall the driver for it (the ! is on the USB hubs, right? if not tell me before you do anything). Go to your laptop manufacture's website, find the USB driver's (for the ports, not the mouse or anything) and download them. If they are packed in a zip of something, unpack them and put them where you can find them on your hard drive.

Go to that yellow ! and right click it. Go to properties, and in there click update driver. Tell it you want to choose a location, and then go to where you unpacked the driver, select it, and tell it to install. That should hopefully fix the problem.

A possible reason might be that there isn't enough power for the device, try disconnecting any other USB devices and plug in only the device you want.

make sure you all the necessary drive for your pc, such as chipset , etc.
If that happen again, unplug USB devices, reboot your pc and see if it works.

it is always the same slot that doesn't work?
did you try swapping the usb dvices on the slot, or try different usb device on that particular slot?
anyway if you have one USB works perfectly than just get an USB extension w/ external power.

It could be the device itself? If the software isn't installed correctly for like an MP3 Player or something of the sort then of course it won't recognize.
