What you're saying is making it sound like universities in Japan suck. Keep in mind though, by most rankings Toudai ranks in the top 20 of the world's best universities. Toudai for Japan is like MIT for the US. Besides, as d.A said, just because you got into college because of your sport doesn't mean you plan on doing it for a living.

It’s not as unreasonable as you actually believing that is the whole reason why Suzuka went to America. Suzuka’s character isn’t the type to flat out tell a girl she barely knows the reason why she made huge a life changing decision. It clearly isn’t the whole truth.

Her character pulled the story out of a boring pit of tedium and back on track towards an ending – quite useful if you ask me.

If anything, Seo is staying true to his characters being idealistic in realistic situations - not that being idealistic counts for anything nowadays.
