i also think akitsuki is a really big idiot, also feel bad when sakurai tell he about her boyfriend after the idiot think only in suzuka....such a bastard is that guy. Even jumpei (ichigo 100%) clearly dump the other girls for nishino and "fight" for her (at the end but is something) but akitsuki give me the idea that he thinks like "i want to be her boyfriend" more than "i want to make she happy" or something like that....arggggg it really piss me off @_@
Worst main character I've run across. He represents everything a weak, willed loser is. Every time I see that dumb-ass smile of his, I want to show him the back of my hand right across that face. I honestly don't know why the author made/makes him that way; because as readers, who'd want to identify with him? The only reason I haven't quit yet, is that I'm looking for closure; and I wish it would come soon.
His only two redeeming qualities are that, for some unknown reason, he had/has girls wanting him. This only works in fiction though; in true life, no fine girl would want to be with him. The other is that he is stubbornly stupid--like a mule or donkey (Yamato probably means donkey or mule in Japanese, or some other degrading metaphor). Being stupid and stubborn is good only when you only have one task to do, where no thinking is required; for Yamato's case, he is pursuing Suzuka.
Yamato? He's a moron. I don't like Suzuka's attitude and mood swings much either, I prefer and get along better with people who are more level headed and cool, but at least Suzuka's smart. Yamato's a complete tool. I dunno what she or the other girls see in him.
That said, it makes for a good (or at least entertaining) story...characters are never going to be 100% realistic because no one's personality in real life is one-dimensional. In fiction, personality traits are generally exaggerated or highlighted to define the characters better and because that makes it easier to write a good story, at least in a genre like this. That's what creates the so called stereotypes. Without them, it'd be more difficult to prefer this character above another, or to tell them apart, predict their actions, understand them or even describe them and give them the appropiate "label" based on our interpretation of what we think they are. Real people are too complicated to make the characters entirely realistic.
In any case, as I said, this does make for an entertaining story; let's just hope the ending isn't a silly cop out like we often see in this kind of manga.
