More golds or more total medals?

Who has the bragging rights?

Golds, obviously. 1st place means you're the best. 1st place is the most important. 2nd and 3rd place are only there to give the 1st place winner more glory, to show who the 1st place beat in order to get to the top.
Kids grow up dreaming of winning a gold medal, not a silver, not a bronze. Athletes train hard and sacrifice their lives for a gold medal, they don't break their bones and estrange themselves from their families in hopes of winning a silver or a bronze.
Gold is the only one that should matter. You don't "almost win". It's either you win, or you don't. Gold = win. Everything else = failure.
And plus, the value of gold on the open market is over ten times that of silver.

voted gold as well, it's the only one that makes sense - like being best in a certain field, and counting which country is the best in how many fields. a country that's 2nd best in a bunch of events can get bragging rights as a generalist, but other than that, definitely gold.

Nah, if that's the case you should be out there winning gold in the pentathlon or decatheon. 2nd best/generalist = fail. If you wanna do that properly, do what Carl Lewis did. You could argue that the guy was good in many fields and thus a generalist, but he was talking gold in the events.

Gold is what it's all about. 2nd place is nothing.

i say its the gold... i mean yippee you have 20 medals but they are all bronze and silver...hum do any of these prove you are the best at what you do? i dont think so!
