That's something Mikoto needs to sort out herself, because I believe she isn't certain herself - he is closer than friend, something more-or-less like family, but less than potential-lover.
She has strong feelings for Hanai, definitely, but are they romantic in nature? The entire cast seems to push Mikoto and Hanai together, but neither of them appears really interested in taking their relationship further. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Hanai becomes another Harima - 3 potential girls, but he is clueless when it comes to some of those girls feelings (one can't express herself, one acts a little childish and one is such a good friend of his that it feels kinda sinful to have deeper feelings to each other than what they have now). Moreover, he loves a girl who is completely unreachable for him (Yakumo)...yes, Hanai is second Harima.
Kolox-Hanai has 1 more girl in the pic than Harima. Also, Hanai has enough courage to confess to people he likes directly, a major difference from Harima. Though, I do see the general analagousness of Harima and Hanai. Same problem dressed in different clothes.
I do think Suou and Hanai have this type of low-key romance stemming from their close childhood friendship. They understand each other very well and think of each other often internally. Because it is such a low-key slow sort of romance, any significant relationship that either of them have could overrule that relationship that Suou and Hanai have with each other, but I don't think it will be quelled. It is one of those kind of relationships which has the potential for escalating into a romantic one, but if left untended it will turn into one of those close familial kind of relationships.
@Ultraness : I was talking about Mikoto and I'm not backing off on what I said - they have feelings toward each others - but it isn't love and I think they already on level to consider themselves like family - both of them are quite forward to each other, they care about each other (Hanai wanted to kill Harima for what happened to Mikoto - misunderstanding) and they do help each other (Mikoto asks Hanai to help her with lots of minors stuff - like shopping). This relationship looks already like one of brother and sister, that it really could be considered sinful if it got any deeper.
@Urameshi : Don't forget about Tae :D
Harima loves : Tenma - Girls Interested in Harima : Tae, Eri, Yakumo
Also Harima tried to confess to Tenma few times.. but it didn't work. In Hanai's situation, he confessed to Yakumo but I don't remember that she ever gave him an answer.
Good point. I did forget.Quote:

Thats the difference though. Harima doesn't have the guts to even forthrightly go through with the confession. At least Hanai is honest enough to try and then get rejected. By not confessing, Harima is just denying a truth he's probably known all along: he has no chance with Tenma.Quote:
