I can't agree with you that Yakumo is just 'a rival' for Eri. She is "THE rival' ;p. I must agree with you that there are lot's of hints about Eri x Harima destined love.... but's it's a comedy romance manga, if it was so obvious it wouldn't be worth reading.

And why would the author made Yakumo so important character ?? Tae and Mikoto are just characters that were supposed to make Eri jealous, nothing serious if we think about their relationship with Harima. Yakumo is diffrent, Yakumo started a 'relationship' with Harima and there is still something between them. Relationship between Mikoto x Harima never really started and Harima x Tae... is like Tae is teasing 'Hario', no love there either.

I will come up with better arguments for Yakumo when I will get my hands on those chapters you were talking about.

If Yakumo was 'THE' rival, then we would have seen Onigiri make a showing in recent times. Onigiri is just part of a particular story arc, as were Marker and Pencil. When you look at the story as a whole, the only 'rivalry' that doesn't fade away at some point is Oudou. That's what really keeps everyone on edge - at the end of the day, Harima's tunnel vision is still dominant. Good things happen whenever Eri does something uncharacteristic to shake Harima's perceptions of Eri. If his old perceptions are to ever shatter, it will happen only during a climactic moment in the story.

Yakumo was used because she's everything that Eri wants to be, pretends to be, and is unable to be. Every matchup between Eri and Yakumo is designed to force Eri to face her feelings of inadequacy. Eri spends hours sewing Harima's jersey - and Yakumo unknowingly fixes it with ease. The same theme is running throughout the cultural festival play - Eri is supposed to be the main character, but her role is ursurped.
The issue of love never comes up when Tae, Mikoto, or Yakumo are involved with Harima. Onigiri works based on innuendo - it seems like romance, but it isn't.

Onigiri! somehow it makes me think your pairing him up with a different character from a different series oh well. Yakumo might seem like the bestfriend type at the moment but from what I've noticed. from her questions to harima, the school festivals and etc. she might have already move on from wanting to become friends with him to something else. ^ o ^ hoho

That's the point. It always seems like something could happen, but nothing ever does - you don't have interest from either side. It's similar to Flute in that respect - people assume that Hanai x Mikoto will develop because they are childhood friends, but their relationship is fairly stable the way that it is - and it just isn't going anywhere.

I wouldn't call Yakumo the 'best friend' type, though. Harima does call her Imouto-san, after all.

Something should happen. i'm waiting for it and if it doesn't, I might end up making a doujinshi where Harima and Yakumo will become a couple, Hanai dying in the process, and they live appily ever after....... I wish XD

I know that Harima calls Yakumo; 'Imouto san' , but its obvious that Harima aren't really friendly with people. (seeing he didn't had a friend before .... maybe) thats probably why he is very polite towards her. btw he couldn't call her Tsukamoto san because he calls tenma that already.

I know I will look stupid after asking this question, but what the hell.
What exactly mean ' Imouto -san ? (One thing I am sure, Imouto isn't Yakumo name ;p).
In one of anime episode of SR they translated Imouto as 'Sister' (Sleeping Beauty episode by Wannabe - 'Tenma Imouto' = 'Tenma Sister', I always thought it was Nee-san or Onee-san)

And if Imouto means Sister, so I am getting even more confused. Does Harima call Yakumo 'Sister' .... can't be, it isn't making sense... could someone explain it for me ?

    P.S Onigiri is winning !!

    Imouto = Little sister
Yakumo being called Imouto is just a short cut for Harima.
rather than calling her Tsukamoto-Imouto san.

Yay! Onigiri is winning! Go Yakumo! Go!

Thanks for explanation, but still, I don't know how would I feel if someone called me 'Tenma's Little Sister' (and If I were a girl ;p).... I will never understand Japan way of thinking..

In future, he will start to call Yakumo 'Ya~chan' or 'Yaku~chan' ;p
