But Fayte's making a point here. however, I don't believe Sanada has ANY REASON AT ALL to have a rivalry with ryoma. First of all, he never had one. second of all, if he has rivalry for ryoma beating him LONG time ago, then that is just stupid, because sanada has clearly shown that he didn't play with all of his abilities. If he did, ryoma would have ended up either dead or....yeah. anyways, during the match, sanada was going easy on ryoma all the while...he wasn't even sweating crazy like ryoma. Second of all, Sanada already had a rivalry with Tezuka(although I don't think Tezuka considered Sanada a rival). Even if Sanada were to beat Tezuka, he wouldn't go ahead and go all Rai on ryoma because Sanada had already beaten his longtime "rival." And, of course, because he's going on to highschool(unless he did really bad in school), he has no reason to get all riled up about ryoma. Third of all, ryoma doesn't consider Sanada to be his rival. Ryoma thinks he's better than sanada because he already beat him before Nationals. However, Fayte, when you said Tezuka getting beaten by Sanada, if that happens, it will trigger ryoma to do something, but not trigger a rivalry. Because 1)ryoma won't be there to witness tezuka's defeat because he's somewhere else 2) ryoma would just say to Tezuka(if he loses)"I'll take Seigaku to the top," or something.
And if Sanada beats Tezuka, he'll be like, "oh, there's nothing to worry about the lil' kid because Tezuka beat him a LOOOONG time ago(He'll be a psychic if he knows tezuka beat ryoma before :D)."
There is a very clear Echizen/Tezuka rivalry. Tezuka set it up himself by making Echizen play him back before the 1st Hyotei match. Whenever Tezuka and Echizen reveal more and more of their strength, both of them show a lot of interest in each other. Echizen hopes to usurp Tezuka's position as Seigaku's pillar of support and Tezuka constantly challenges Echizen as a captain and showed more surprise and interest during the Echizen/Kintarou match than anyone else there.

If Sanada considered Echizen a true rival, then he would have played their Kantou match more seriously earlier. Sanada's rivalry exists exclusively with Tezuka, who he has a lot of history with and thus an animosity. Sanada's so-called rivalry with Echizen is as flat as his 'rivalry' with Atobe. Except Atobe really did consider Sanada a rival. Echizen just saw Sanada as a stepping stone and his white whale for that match (again, Ichigo v Kempachi: need to win, overwhelming disadvantages, etc).
You can think that if you really want to. However Tezuka does not see Echizen as a rival, I'm sorry. Tezuka only wants Echizen to be the successor of himself. Going with the mindset of a rival being somebody that wants to beat you with "Great emotion", the only rivals in the series are as of now:
Echizen <---> Kintarou
Echizen ---> Tezuka, Nanjiroh
Sanada ---> Tezuka
Tezuka ---> Nobody
Atobe --->Sanada, Tezuka
What about Inui<----->Renji? Or Yuuta----->Fuji?
I was going with the rivals we were talking about, but thanks Sinoel :P
Tezuka's always had a lot of interest in Echizen's progress, though. I could see a hidden rivalry there.
Tezuka doesn't seem to be the type of person to have any rivalry. Just like Fayte said, "Great Emotion" sometimes, but not rivalry. Although Echizen wants to surpass him, I think.
I agree with amxed and Fayte. Tezuka doesn't really have anyone he considers his "rival" as in "I want to beat you so badly". He just doesn't seem to care enough about who he's playing. Fayte's "chart" seems pretty accurate. Echizen sorta had a rivalry with Atobe, but that's pretty much been settled and disregarded.
As for Fayte's theory on a Echizen/Sanada rivalry, I won't say it can't happen, but it's certainly a long shot.
I will say this, if Sanada beats Tezuka, it will happen.
It seems like Echizen has enough rivals as it is, though. Too many rivals downplays the whole impact of facing your rival.
