A gekokujo you say, well a strong leader also has to be one that can suppress these rebels when they attempt these coup d'état. This is the part where violence may come into the picture. If there were to be an attempted gekokujo on me, I'd use these coup d'étaters and brutally destroy them as an example to the others who think they can overthrow me. I believe using fear to control the masses who already fear you will prevent them from rebelling. Those who still attempt a gekokujo will simply be thrown to the ground.

On the other hand, losing respect probably wouldn't be nearly as painful as losing fear.
I don't know about compromising, a leader should be one that is able to lay down his ideals without worrying about respect; if they're truly in control of everyone, they need not worry about whether everyone respects them or not, or even rebelling against them for that matter. If you use respect/liking to control people, it makes them feel like you have no control over them, and some will ultimately gekokujo you as well if they think you're weak, so yeah as you suggested you have to compromise you ideals in that case just to hold onto respect and most importantly, power.

I like nerds too. and Inui's hot... so is Kaidou.
I find it really hard to choose between Kaidou and Inui. there my favorite from Seigaku. But I'll choose Kaidou because he's cute... and mostly because I liked him longer.

Edit: I was expecting it with Inui and Kaidou but I'm surprised Tezuka has so little votes. well I guess it's not too surprising he wouldn't be first Fuji is popular. but I guess second isn't bad

.......... You are really taking this Echizen hating a little too far. Denying his existence isn't going to make him go away.
