Sure I'm just guessing, but considering Sanada uses FuuRinKaZan when he's in a pinch, one can guess that he must be weaker than Atobe without it. So both without their 'special techniques' should result in Sanada losing, if he doesn't swallow his pride and fully uses SOSA.

No, He only used Mountain against Atobe in the 3rd game. He used just his skill to win the 2 games before that.

You don't see the entire fight, but thats what they lean on to. I personaly think he used 2.

xxsaznpride hits it right in the eye! Ryoma had been exposed to his dad's "zone" before he became aware of his buchou's; hence, he could not have been in SOSA. he was showing one of his skills.

is there a systematic way of rating the players? say, put up a criteria or a scoring system. please don't bite my head off. i'm just making a suggestion.

The fact that he "said" Mountain, proves that its the first time he is using it. Every anime is the same way. They say their technique for only the first time. (unless it is a recap of the previous episode/chapter.)

-And SpiffSpoo, The technique you are missing is Forest.

Could be for letting the reader know he uses it.

Also during his match with Ryoma he announces Fire more than once, too. Could just be his personal quirk to say his technique when he uses it.

No, He announced it again in the next chapter, to recap what he did in the previous chapter. Notice he doesn't say it anymore after that.

I agree.

If Sanada announcing Fire/Mountain before he does the move is simply to help us the reader identify which is which.

If I saw the move Sanada did for the first time, I'd have no idea what it was supposed to be called unless Sanada announced what move it was.

Uh no? He doesn't announce it one time, but you can pretty much guess it's because somebody speaks at that moment (about regaining pride and so on).
In Chapters 228-230 he uses Fire 5 times and announces it 4 times, it really seems to be his personal quirk.
And Fire is easy to identify after the first time.
