Kite Eishirou cared for his team a lot. Even though they were all violent, that was more because of the coaches influence. Kite helped them all become better players; it showed this better in the anime.
Plus, Kite is freaking awesome! Tezuka was probably the only one that could beat him at the time. Fuji didn't even start trying in his match until he started using the 4th counter, so he might have been able to take on Kite. Ryoma couldn't do it; Kite just had too many different techniques. Inui would have been the only other player that could have had a chance against him.
