Oooooooooooo.... you've got a point there... I guess he'll just beat him over and over until it's sure he'll win, then he'll invite his friends for a "beat my dad" sleepover, then he'll record 138 matches beating consecutively his father and buy a cat for each one so they remember him that he beat the only person in the world that reached Ten'i Mohou No Kiwami. Then he'll just toss his dad in an old man nursery and live "happily ever after" teaching english in a lowlife slum. That's just me don't know if you think the same...

what you guys don't understand is that tennis is Echizen Ryoma's life. why think what his life would be if he's not playing tennis? heck! who would know that?! he might be prince of basketball or anything else. focusing on a certain thing and giving your all to it doesn't mean you don't have a life. well, for me, doing that particular thing is life unless you don't give your best on it.

it just happens that Echizen was introduced to tennis really early in his life. if he was introduced to any other thing when he was young, i reckon he would have done great on that too. he's just the kind who gives his all on the one thing he's good at.

and don't you think a cocky, laidback, devil-may-care personality juxtaposed with talent is a nice change from all the cliche that is other manga/anime protagonists like, say, Naruto, Ash Ketchum, etc. who all have the loser-but-strives-to-win personality?

Ok ok you're right... but one thing is certain... the moment he succesds in beating his father he'll have nothing to strive for cause he doesn't want to become a pro. What will become of him then is the most important question when we're talking about ryomas life (Or need of a)... kokusaikone was the one who nailed this thread by asking this. Will he become a pro after all? I mean he beat the only Ten'i Mohou No Kiwami user who was supposed to be the greatest player of them all...

sure he has a personality, he just happens to be as boring as hell. Same goes for Tezuka and Sanada and Rukawa.

At least they're able to carry a conversation. In ryoma's case a conversation goes something like this

Person A: So ryoma, how are you
    Ryoma: Hummm
    PErson A: NIce weather eh?
    Ryoma: Ahhh

    (Awkward Silence)

Ryoma: I can beat you in tennis

    So on and so forth

    Eh actually, talking to Tezuka and Sanada is like talking to a brick wall unless it's about tennis -_-;;

Really it would be like this--

    Momoshiro-Good morning Buchou
    Tezuka-Good morning.
    Momoshiro-Nice weather today huh?
    Tezuka-Aa

    -Silence-

-_-;; really, I would have no idea how to talk to Tezuka without being ordered to do laps >_<;; Uwah, Sanada would be scary too since he hits people.

Ryoma's personality is not a loud and obvious one like many of his teammates, and when he has become emotional (check out the anime where this is more obvious) his teammates are quick to point this out. He actually becomes animated and talkative when this happens. I also agree about the Karupin episode. Until this happened I did not realize how attached to it he really was, and got a big hoot out of Viper's relationship with the cat.

I would like to see him in the rest of Jr high, or skip ahead to high school. They drop hints towards the end of what is available that make me wonder if he might actually go pro when he has embraced and perfected his own style. Up until now he has basically mimiced his dad and the players around him, but we are starting to see Ryoma's style peek through the cracks. I just hope they don't cut this off at the Nationals.
Make time every day to have a bit of fun.

or maybe Ryoma doesn't talk much cause he doesn't have anything to say. At least we can tell the other's personality by their actions. The only thing Ryoma does is sleep and play tennis. What the hell

I don't deny that Tezuka has no personality either. I think he's just there cause he looks cool and strong guys have to look cool (or stupid)

But Ryoma is THE MAIN CHARACTER for god's sakes. IF the supporting characters were a bit shallow, sure, go ahead, but to drop the main character down to the level of a support character, I have a problem with that

...im not sure if you were trying to say Tezuka looked stupid or not but even if you didn't I'll say this.

I didn't mean to give the impression that Tezuka has no personality. I was just trying to show that just because you don't talk much doesn't mean you have no personality.

But yes I agree, Echizen doesn't show much through words OR actions...I still think he still does have quite an obvious personality despite how annoying I find him. I don't find Echizen that shallow, he's actually rather deep if you look into it a bit more. He's a snarky bratty annoying kid that doesn't like to say much or show his more caring side.(*choke* I can't believe I wrote that)
