If i had a grand masterpiece that i slowly built over the course of many many years and poured my heart and soul into it, and i'm about to die, you'd bet your ass it's going to be near the top of my list of "things to finish before i die"

Yeah, there are assistants, but assistants usually only help with backgrounds or minor characters and the like. Oda probably wants to draw all the scenes with Straw Hat Pirates or CP9 himself.

Anyway, it's just sickness. The japanese usually do say something vague like that and the fact that they didn't announce when it will be back on is worrisome, but you shouldn't be so freaked out about it. It's possible that it's 'just' a broken arm or something that makes it impossible to draw or a while, it's most likely not anything fatal. If he doesn't be back in a couple of months, then it's time to start worrying.

No more die mates! Maybe it's a little bit serious flu but it's not danger. At least I hope so. I have never seen Oda's sick in 3 years I've been with 1 piece so if it's enough to be on a magazine then it's serious but he won't die. If it's life threatening then we should know.
I hope it's not like Ueki. The mangaka (Ueki) was ill in November and the manga has been stopped till now ><
btw Oda was born in 1975 so that's make him 31 now.

Well if it's flu, it's got to be a really serious one, so serious he can't draw for at least a month. If it's only a small illness, that should keep him in a bed for a week or two, they wouldn't probably even announce it beforehand. Most mangakas stay 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule, so Oda could just take a small break until he's recovered and then work hard to catch up. The fact that it was announced a week earlier and no returning date was given means that it's got to be somewhat serious, but I still don't think it's quite lifethreatening. Let's just hope he'll be back in a month or two.
