Why Did Usopp Leave?
I was just re-reading the Water Seven Arc and during his talk with Franky, Usopp reveals that he knew about the ship's condition beforehand. When he's pressed by Franky to answer why Usopp quit the Strawhat crew, Usopp hesitates and CP9 enters the hideout. So that got me wondering...
Why'd Usopp decide to not only leave the Strawhat Pirates, but also challenge Luffy to a duel?
Especially since he probably knew that he'd lose.
he didn't agree about buying a new boat because he valued the going merry a lot, cause it was a girl from his hometown who gave the strawhats the boat. as the boat was pretty much destroyed they should buy another one, but ussop didn't agree, so they fought.
cuz he was being a stubborn bastard
Cuz he wanted to go back to his home town one day and have a year of hot sex with the sick chick.
He'll probably go back and find her having sex with another guy and get killed by that guy since he is stilll lowbie... like in a RPG, Ruffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Nico are the ones who get all the exp...
2 begin with the above were correct in that he valued it a lot n didn't just view it as their means of transportation but also a crew member, luffy also admitted that he felt the same way but just had no other choice seeing as how it'll inevitably break anytime soon
usopp knew this but didn't know what 2 do, couldn't accept the fact, y?
not only cos he saw the ship's klabautermann, thus convincing him that merry was still willing 2 fight until the end but usopp thought about how wrong it is 4 a captain 2 simply just throw out an old nakama simply because she's no longer of any use.
remember luffy did admit that he saw merry as if she was their nakama
he then made this connection with himself; ie every1 else is growing stronger, he's the only useless 1 n he applied the principle of luffy's disregard of a useless nakama on himself, leading him 2 think that he'll end up as another useless nakama which luffy will throw out, causing his blood 2 boil, if u will.
usopp only fought luffy 2 a duel 2 defend his honour, kinda like the whole "u can't fire me cos i'm quitting" thing, n the fight was 2 win back merry.
can't just say usopp was just a stubborn arsehole
edit: bad times
Usopp left, becuase he is the most selfish character alive. He wants to keep the ship becuase that girl gave it to him back in his hometown, so he tries to convince his crew to continue sailing on it, even though doing so means that it will endanger the life of all his crewmates. So, it really isnt that hard to see why Usopp tried to leave teh Strawhats. He became too enraptured w/ an inanimate object, and so decided to leave the crew becuase they refused to go along w/ his childish selfishness and continue to travel on the broken/crippled GM.
Also, I think Usopp challenged Luffy to a duel becuase although he knew he was going to lose, he decided to risk his life for a friggin ship (insert rolly eyes here)
edit: o, i just read ns's post, and in reply: OK, so Usopp is upset that he is becoming useless, and fears that he will be discarded like tha GM. So, what does he do? Does he attempt to grow stronger, or try to develop new strategies by intermixing his dials? No. All he does is mope around, cry, and challenge Luffy to a duel. If he was truly sorry, then he should have tried to make a difference, either by improving his sniping skills, getting stronger, or just by aiding his team. Besides, I thought that Usopp did quite a lot for the crew. (In anime) he destroyed that huge ship w/ cannon by firing a perfect cannon ball, he developed weapons for Nami, and he also just helped create a nice, funny atmosphere. Yet, he is so blinded by his weak physical strength that he cannot see his own positives and decides to only dwell on his negative aspects. IMO, Luffy should just kick Usopp out (not going to happen, i know), becuase I am tired of his whining and his hiding. Besides, Franky is much funnier neway :)
I think there are two reasons Usopp left:
1 - He wasn't there when Luffy and the rest received the news. He had no idea how long they knew or what their original reaction was or how desperately they wanted the Going Merry repaired. He just saw Luffy looking through a catalog and smiling at the idea of the next ship. He didn't see Luffy take it seriously, and so he thought the Going Merry was being disrespected, and abandoned without a second thought.
2 - He wasn't fighting Luffy as much as he was fighting himself. Usopp knew the Going Merry couldn't make it, he knew that the Straw Hat crew needed a new ship, but he felt he was abandoning a dying friend and trashing the gift that Kaya had given him. He wanted to be punished for thinking of abandoning the Going Merry.
3 - He proved (to himself) that he was utterly useless. He lost the B200 million and couldn't get it back - his strongest effort was useless. He had to be rescued while the other Straw Hats DEVASTATED the Frankie group. Even Nami is stronger than Usopp (he thinks). So Usopp believes that he doesn't belong to the group. In order to save them the trouble of kicking him out, he got in a fight he knew he would lose (saved face for the others). He just can't accept being the weakest.
That's my opinion, anyway ...
That's why I love One Piece - the depth of the characters is amazing. Well, I could be reading a lot more into it than what was written, but it's written well enough to that.
I agree, Franky is funnier than usopp after he is introduced.
I dont agree wut what Usopp did but i do feel sympathy for his actions.
Its hard to just look at the bright side of everything you do since when theres good, there bad and bad always shines brighter.
The duel was really meaningful. He pour out everything he had against someone he knew he would lose to and turned out to be one of the best fights in the whole series.
I have never been able to comprehend the whole having to scrap Mery completely thing.
I understood that the ship itself was unable to sail anymore because of it's condition. Especially the bottom part. But couldn't they just remodel Merry into a new ship. Using some of the old part from Merry(Preferably the top part of Merry, like ythe Deck) and new parts to make a new yet old Merry. Meaning keeping the head piece and other parts, so it would seem like they were not totally abandoning Merry. But that's just my opinion.
thats what franky will probably do in the end
edit:build a bigger ship with some parts
