I understood that the ship itself was unable to sail anymore because of it's condition. Especially the bottom part. But couldn't they just remodel Merry into a new ship. Using some of the old part from Merry(Preferably the top part of Merry, like ythe Deck) and new parts to make a new yet old Merry. Meaning keeping the head piece and other parts, so it would seem like they were not totally abandoning Merry. But that's just my opinion.
its because according to the carpenters of W7, teh ship's essence will not be the same because different wood was used to make it. So, their argument is that even if same wood is used, some different wood will eventually have to be used, which supposedly takes away teh "spirit" of GM.

Trying to immitate Going Merry with the new ship would only make the loss of Going Merry greater to the strawhats. The differences between Going Merry and the new ship would be magnified by thier likeness, they won't see the new ship as a different entity they'll see it as a copy of thier friend. For example: Imagine if all your closest friends were replaced with people that looked sort of like them and acted sort of like them, the pian of losing your old friends would be greater because these new ones would constantly remind you of them without actually bringing them back. This was the basic Idea that the shipwrights were trying to get at when they said that it was best to scrap the ship and get a new one. I do believe the Sheep head from Going Merry will be salvaged and put on the new ship.

So, it really isnt that hard to see why Usopp tried to leave teh Strawhats. He became too enraptured w/ an inanimate object, and so decided to leave the crew becuase they refused to go along w/ his childish selfishness and continue to travel on the broken/crippled GM.

Also, I think Usopp challenged Luffy to a duel becuase although he knew he was going to lose, he decided to risk his life for a friggin ship (insert rolly eyes here)

edit: o, i just read ns's post, and in reply: OK, so Usopp is upset that he is becoming useless, and fears that he will be discarded like tha GM. So, what does he do? Does he attempt to grow stronger, or try to develop new strategies by intermixing his dials? No. All he does is mope around, cry, and challenge Luffy to a duel. If he was truly sorry, then he should have tried to make a difference, either by improving his sniping skills, getting stronger, or just by aiding his team. Besides, I thought that Usopp did quite a lot for the crew. (In anime) he destroyed that huge ship w/ cannon by firing a perfect cannon ball, he developed weapons for Nami, and he also just helped create a nice, funny atmosphere. Yet, he is so blinded by his weak physical strength that he cannot see his own positives and decides to only dwell on his negative aspects. IMO, Luffy should just kick Usopp out (not going to happen, i know), becuase I am tired of his whining and his hiding. Besides, Franky is much funnier neway

You're dumb and I pity you for it.

I think that's what Usopp is doing as Sogeking. He has at least one new weapon, and considering he actually gave Luffy a hard time, he is pretty damn strong.

    My turn.

Ussop's a man. Unlike Nami who can depend on the guys to defend her, Ussop's got a warrior's spirit but he's also a coward. His cowardice makes him weak, as all his adventures have proven. When he lost the 200 million beli and lost to the fight against Franky Family, his pride was crippled. Adding to his frustration, Luffy suddenly announced that he was going to abandon the ship for a new one. Ussop, who has seen the Klabautermann, came to the conclusion that Luffy was willing to give up weak and crippled nakama in order to continue his journey. In a desperate attempt to prove that he's not weak, Ussop challenged Luffy, the strongest Strawhat, to a duel. With a broken pride, failing health, poverty, and a resulting clouded judgement, he decided to try returning home on Going Merry. If it weren't for Franky, Ussop would have definitely died.

When Ussop heard of Luffy's determination to save Robin no matter what the risks were, he suddenly realized that he was the one at error. However, a man's man shouldn't take back his words, so he decided to hide his shame, diffidence, and cowardice behind a mask and remade himself as the supersharpshooter Sogeking. Now he's got charisma and fortitude, as well as a set of new moves, although he still needs to work on controlling his emotions and reactions, but that's another effort entirely.

I wouldn't say it's so much his cowardice that is his problem(he's come through in the end basically every time he's fought, and challenged Luffy, perhaps the strongest person he's ever met, to a duel) but it's simply the matter that Usopp is a normal man trying to compete with supermen. Usopp's really no different from any of us, and he's trying to keep up with people who can do things beyond inhuman. It was especially clear when Usopp found himself unable to keep people from stealing the money, and failing to win the fight to get it back. Usopp continues to face his task of becoming a warrior, but surronded by people who couldn't begin to compete with, or he tells himself that at least.

Everything else you've said is just about right, he saw himself in the Going Merry and saw Luffy being willing to abadon him.

But we've seen the examples of what happens when Usopp really decides something is worth fighting to the limit for, and his ability to judge a foe and attack his weaknesses and counter his strengths is amazing. The way Oda writes, I don't think he'll remain as a joke character, at least in his combat. We'll hopefully get to see some serious fighting from him during this next battle.
