Yeah, I can really see each Strawhat as a member of the family rather than an arm or a leg of one character. If left alone for their own stories, each Strawhat can be a main character. It's a big party of shounen characters.

Is Ussop really stupid? Or is he very smart?

I think he's an intelligent person, but he is very very immature (he hangs around 8 year olds even though he's 17 -_-)

Let's rate the maturity of these guys from most at the top to least at the bottom:

Zoro -why isn't he captain Strong willed, cool tempered, serious, courageous, initiative. Unfortunately, a poor decision maker.
Sanji -principled with a strong moral code, but he always loses his cool around hot women.
Luffy* -he shows true wisdom at times, but he tends to fool around and not take things seriously. Awesome decision maker socially, but sucks in practicality. part 1
Franky -leader of an underground gang, he needs to show strength of mind. However, he grew up as a totally disobedient and immature kid.
Robin -less mature than Franky because she can't handle her own emotions well in stressful situations even though she's very intelligent and wise.
Nami -insecure with a short temper, she's also bossy but can't actually handle stress very well. Less mature than Robin only because Robin can at least hide negative feelings in casual situations.
Luffy* -part 2. fools around with stupid ideas, easily fooled and mind controlled, no self-restraint (there are exceptions). Shows maturity when stressed though. Admits that he needs his friends (nakama)
Ussop -hangs around with kids, runs away from fights, dependent albeit supporting, and a dreamer/fantasizer. Yeah, not very manly -_-, but he at least tries when he's pushed, although he acts rashly. He at least has his pride as a pirate.
Chopper -kawaii akachan. Baby of the group who looks up to everyone, idealistic, dependent, fools around, easily fooled, easily scared, easily amazed, afraid of people, afraid of scary situations, and most of all: naive. Chopper was really pushed to the limit in Enies Lobby. If it weren't for 3 Rumble Ball secret, he would have died for sure.

Now this quote is bias towards Zoro but I won't oppose it, but rather support it! Chopper wouldn't be in the Mugiwara group without those abilities as captain Luffi would say he won't have any characters.

Anyway I will still not accept the fact that Franky will join them!!! Never!

That's a very good insight Pentaelemental, though a little biased towards Zoro (but I do agree that he seems to fit the captain-role quite well too).
I do have a slight objection though, I think Franky (if he joins) should be under Robin, and possibly Nami. This is because that, even though he is a leader of his underground gang, he mainly rules by strength. The reason why he has his followers is because he is strong, and can protect them. Nonetheless, there have been moments where he has shown some maturity, but I think Robin/possibly Nami will be more suited for the role.

Can anyone refresh my memory as to what dream Chopper has?

Chopper's dream is Hiruluk's dream: cure every disease in the world.

I have to question Franky's maturity as well, but because he's new, I don't have much info to base him on; anyhow, there was the childish name calling and sarcasm that could put him under Robin and maybe under Nami.

Also, I'd like to put Luffy in one place, but he's such a funny guy, you can't reliably predict what he does or says.
