jalopi clearly has no idea what a metaphor is. Oda uses them in many of his attacks Gomu Gomu no Pistol is clearly not a pistol is it? So it is not beyond possibility that Gear Second and Gear 3 are named for the components in a transmission. And no sir, I shall not baste you.

Well, it would make sense to compare Luffy's gears to that of a car, where each gear allows the car to move on certain terrain, whereas luffy's gears give him different abilities.

But yes, I agree that it is foolish to assume that luffy will have x ammout of gears because a car will have that much, Luffy =|= car

Its perfectly fine to use the gears in a car to describe how luffy's power works, but not to describe Luffy

I'm asian, and I can assure you, during my fourteen years of life w/o reading manga, I was never aware of chi/chakra/"breath"/etc., even though I do watch tons of asian game shows/movies/sitcoms/dramas. Also, its hypocritical to criticize someone for stereotyping a race, and then make a post a page later that stereotypes multiple ethnicites.

Furthermore, white(at least American) culture does believe in a type of "chi" in one form or another. Look at that popular belief that's going around, forgot the name, but it involves rearrranging one's furniture to "channel positive energy and repell negative ones." If that's not an asian belief, then I dont know what is.

Good thoughts Ayato, but I've been thinking about this, how to explain the gear stuff, and I'd like to chime in if I may. Btw everyone, if you surf to wikipedia's One Piece article and click your way to Luffy, it had some interesting info about gears, or rather, some well-considered speculation I should say. Anyway, this seems like a time when after the fact, when everyone's sailing again after the arc concludes, Luffy will explain what he did but his explanation will be....less than scientific and really tell the crew nothing except he just felt like it or something. If I had to guess, he probably doesn't really know what happens himself. So then Nami, being the rather intelligent individual she is, from what she sees and/or hears of his actions, will probably go into a little scientific discussion of vulcanization and such. Everyone will be really intriguied and understand her explanation....except Luffy of course. At which point, Luffy'll go, "Yosh, so it's a mystery gear!" (or something) and everyone will be mad, hit him, and go "YOU DID IT YOURSELF!!!". Just my two cents.

Now I am generalizing. Pardon me for that, but it's an old habit picked up from my parents and relatives.

Why is everyone so vulcanization crazy? That in no way explains how Luffy suddenly was using his "jet insert name here" attacks. The gear also didn't make him faster, soru is what did that.

Hmm...I didn't kown what Soru was so i looked it up at Wikipedia. I was surpised at what i found.

"Soru (剃) - Literally, "to shave". A technique in which the user moves at very high speeds in order to avoid attacks, as well as to attack at higher speeds. It was revealed that the principle of this move was to kick the ground several times in the blink of an eye. Luffy has also learned this move and was able to use it against Blueno."

i still dont know why everyone thinks luffy used vulcanization to reach gear 2, since luffy said he learned his gear 2 from incountering CP9, and far as i know, no one in CP9 used vulcanization to make them stronger. Luffy's gear 2 is the same as CP9's soru, probably faster, and the way they do it is is by kicking the ground multiple times in the blink of an eye, but i think Luffy's gear 2 is different then this. Instead of just kicking the ground I think he also vibrates his body (he is made of rubber so by vibrating his body he gains elastic energy) doubling his power.

can we count the movie as well? CUz luffy uses gear 2 in the movie, and since Franky is not in the crew this mean this is before water7 rite? And if he used gear 2 bak then he could had never learned it from the CP9. SO this make the vulcanization theory possible and kick the soru theory.

I kno, i kno movie doesn't count rite? but maybe the movie is a clue since the get approve by oda rite?

one question..............why did luffy hav to bite his thumb b4 he's able to use his "gears"??

or maybe the gears cause him alot of pain so he bites his thumb to focus his attention elseware

or maybe its the cool thing kids do in the one piece universe before powering up and defeating thier enemies
