Bartholomew Kuma (or Bear) would be based on Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart). Not only do the names match, but Black Bart was well dressed, well mannared, disliked violence, against drinking, etc., which is the same personality that Bartholomew Kuma exudes.

Mihawk might be loosely based on Dracula (most translations I've ever seen have called him Dracule Mihawk).

cool! i didnt see the relation between usopp/aesop. or franky/popeye!

this increases the depth of OP for me. now i gotta see every character in a different light! i wonder if there are more references to be found among other characters.

I personally like the translation Jiraquille Mihawk, because it fits better when spelled out in romaji. The Kuma works, but they both could fit that description (Kuma more so, but Mihawk also wears the pimp hat, so..)

    And maybe:
Dracul derives from Drake (Francis, first 'real' pirate)
Mihawk, from Hawkins (John, Drake's uncle, who taught him how to be a pirate)
    Hmm... don't know

Francis Drake was a corsair, not a pirate. Check the difference yourself.

there was a 2 hour special on Blackbeard a couple nights ago on the National Geographic Channel, and they mentioned a Samuel Bellamy as being a pirate that once served with Blackbeard. So I'm adding Bellamy the Hyena as being based on this Samuel Bellamy.

Also, I thought that buckaneers were pirates of the carribean (or america's?), and corsairs were pirates of the meditarranean (or europe?)
