Thread: does anybody else think one piece is getting like dbz

i am afraid that one piece is going into the direction of dbz, it is getting kind of repetitive, you know big enemy is comeing, seems much stronger, luffy is´very surprisingly able to "send him flying", you know the scheme.
i think its time for ruffy to at least meet shanks, for the manga not to become boring. on the other hand i have to say that oda is very creative, for example when the team had this battle for the crew members.

it also sometimes bothers me how bad the translation is, i do not think that i have seen a single if sentence with the right tense. also, since i am austrian i read one piece in german where luffy is called ruffy, so when i read luffy it makes me laugh out loud since it sounds very absurd. still i appreciate the work of the translaters very much, i couldnt do it a bit better because i do not know any japanese. i really am glad they do this. thanks a lot guys!

i know there is no option to winning the fight eventually, and i dont want him to lose either. i am still highly entertained by the manga, and i know its very far fetched to compare one piece to dbz and i did say that oda is very creative.
i just have the feeling its time to proceed with the main storyline

not before the end of this arc, but maybe the next big arc will be about pirate summit and we will learn a lot of things

One thing you guys aren't quite getting is that this is a main storyline. Obiously discovering the evil secrets of the world government/it's past and Luffy declaring war against them, thats something thats gonna be a huge part of the story no matter how you look at it.

One Piece is nothing like dbz as Ayato said. Luffy is not like the Goku type where he would come out on top always. Remember he got totally owned by Akoji too. And didn't fight back against Bellamy(sp?) That's something you wouldn't see in DBZ a character not fighting back. And even though he had a huge advantage over Eneru, Eneru was still giving him the works.

So no nothing like DBZ.

To bimbam: Ruffy may sound alright if it was pronounced as ruh-fee, but its u is pronounced as oo, so it will sound like roo-fee now. The problem with this is that a drug, roofie, which is used by rapists to subdue their victims by putting in in their drinks, sounds the same as Ruffy. Now Luffy, which was funny from the start--mixing well with Monkey D., is a better choice. Besides, in the original Japanese manga, (I think) the wanted posters said MONKEY D. LUFFY.

To the rest and the topic: ONE PIECE is not exactly like DBZ, but to go to the other extreme and say it's completely different is not correct either. If Oda is greatly influenced by Toriyama, then I think it's safe to say that Oda's work is similar to Toriyama's. However, Oda has viewed way more art than DBZ, so he'll get more ideas from other places.

Luffy will continue to get stronger, because he's always going against and adapting to overwhelming odds, so he's like Goku in that sense. In addition, although it's not shown in DBZ, Goku would refuse to fight if fighting shows that he's weak. However, Dragonball has never given a situation that fighting would result in Goku looking weak or bad. Luffy and Goku are similar enough to say that they'll have the same general behavior.

The manga is on the main storyline, and the storyline is now in the "now Strawhats kick evil butt" part of the storyline. Fight scenes are of course abound. The exception would be various character struggles as they try to conquer their weaknesses--and they will, or find a weakness in their enemy to exploit.
Why do you like your characters and want them to win? That's because having strong spirits lose to weak spirits will break your hearts. The strong spirits won't lose to weak spirits. However, weapons with no spirit will actually be able to destroy strong spirits, ironically. E.g. guns killing heroes. This spirit is rather difficult to argue because only experts truely understand the whole cycle of what wins against what, and I'm not an expert so the discussion on this stops here for me.

ONE PIECE is full of new ideas. New creatures, new tools and weapons, new fruits, new characters, new islands, just like how a good manga is supposed to be. It also develops older characters and fits them into the new settings, like Ussop becoming Sogeking. Finally, new ideas always support the initial inspiration, as the characters you knew aren't completely foreign from what you're seeing now. As an extra that shows genius, Oda adds unpredictability and shows mundane ideas in new lights, and at exceptional performances, show complete character trait reversal successfully <--very hard--, although good examples would be Luffy taking a beating and ridicule from Bellamy, and Robin breaking that intellectual composure into a crying child, and Nami betraying the Strawhats, just to realize that they are her heroes, and even when Luffy fears Aokiji.

As for ONE PIECE being similar to DBZ, the characters get so damn powerful after each encounter! Zoro, who got his ass handed to him by Kaku, now fights him evenly, if not with more advantage. Luffy, went from being tied down by iron bands went to breaking apartment buildings in half while being suffocated between its walls, and then proceeding to defeating a CP9 on his own after being exhausted defeating a thousand armed soldiers. Goku did the same thing all the time. Then, there was Gear 2. Thus ONE PIECE has some similarities to DBZ, but not practically the same.

DBZ is old manga and less appealing than new manga because it belongs to a different generation--for example, my former Japanese language teacher was a Dragonball fan, and decorated the classroom full of DBZ merchandise. Being old does not make it bad or uninspiring, it's just outdated. Future manga artists reading ONE PIECE will be inspired by Oda's work and make new manga that makes ONE PIECE seem outdated and uninspired, and that's just how things are.

Actually, Oda would be honored to hear that his work is like DBZ. So to him, it's not insulting at all.

As for why the Buu arc is the way it is, I think Toriyama just ran out of ideas, so he put in stuff like big fat pink guys, and magic, and sorcery, and overdieties, and SSJ3 to fill in the plot, then he quit. As for SSJ4, that's TOEI animation studios original idea, and Toriyama didn't do diddly for it. Thus, SSJ4 is actually an "overfiller" idea.

Oda loved DBZ, so he makes ONE PIECE kind of like DBZ, but its good because the ideas are still fresh, and the story is full of excitement and anticipation. If you think ONE PIECE is becoming like DBZ, you're wrong as Oda's keeping it fresh. If you think ONE PIECE is nothing like DBZ, you're wrong because it's very much like DBZ in some ways. If you think ONE PIECE is awesome and Oda's a genius, DAMN STRAIGHT!!!

Being compared to DBZ isnt an insult like you said, for most people (myself included) it got alot of people started on anime and manga. Up to the cell games i thought was class, but then after that it just got stupid and obviously seemed like they were reaching for idea's.
If your going to compare one piece to DBZ, then i think you should look at the other shonen jump manga's before onepiece. bleach for one is much more like it in terms of ichigo getting stronger and what not (he goes away to train for 3 days and becomes as powerful as byakura... when i saw that it totally reminded me of the hyperbolic time chamber) and then there's bleach, which i dont personally watch because i think it's shit. but i've heard that's also very similiar to DBZ... So out of them one piece is probably the least like DBZ, but it is in the same sort of genre.

I would have to say no as well. First, one peice is better drawn! (my opinion)

Also, there is more to one peice then dbz. dbz is just fight, more fight, then some more fighting, screaming guys growing insanely large amounts of hair and then some big exployions.

With one peice, there is a lot of fighting, but that is not all, also one peice is FUNNY!

Is DBZ crap?? I think no, so when a manga is similar to it that doesn't mean a bad thing.

I always hear people complain about DBz and nobody disagreeing with them.

But the fact is, without DBz they wouldn't recognize the One Piece they know.
Yes, it was kinda simple and repetitive (goku gets a beating, trains and than wins), but it was the work of a genius for that time.

It's the classic Shounen jump manga. Just like One Piece, Bleach, Naruto etc are.
So it's kinda obvious they are a lot alike. They feature fighting and of course the enemys have to get stronger. There is no point in making it different. Would you rather want to see Ruffy fight a much weaker opponent? He'd beat him in seconds. Where is the fun in that?

But in terms of storytelling and possibilyts, they offer the reader more.
And there is your difference.

It's just like comparing a movie from 1990 to one from this year. Of course the old one is a bit outdated and much more simple.
But that doesn't mean it's not as good.


So if you want to look at it this way, Op was kinda like DBz from the start.
And that's not a bad thing.



For the Luffy/Ruffy thing.
I'm from germany where he is called Ruffy. But I actually prefer to read the english version. One reason is the release of most mangas (we only have 12 vol of naruto so far), and the fact that i don't like to wait.
The other that the german translations suck (same for simpons, friends etc).

But for me Ruffy sounds better than Luffy. Just like Lorenor sound better than Roronoa.
But we all know we are talking about the same char, and we all love OP.
So the difference doesn't really matter.
