Dragon Ball Z was a victim of it's own sucsess, the mangaka actually wanted it to stop after the freeza saga (which actually seems reasonable), but at the time it was far too popular and he was forced to continue which is what caused a lot of the problems people have with DBZ. DBZ's popularity was still affecting it at the end of the Manga, the mangaka actually wanted Gohan to be the final hero of the series (DB was Goku finding himself, DBZ - Freeza Was Goku Becoming a man and avenging his race, the rest of DBZ was supposed to be Gohan becoming a man) but the insane fandom of Goku forced him too change the ending (which is why Super Buu turns into the weaker Kid Buu and SSJ3 Goku defeates him). The series was further damaged by the Anime-only series DBGT which the mangaka didn't even want and was not a part of. There are similarities between the big three now and DB/Z because the Mangaka now grew-up watching/reading it. One Piece is one of the most original shonen manga we've had in a while and it does have some similarities with DB/Z (Just like future manga will have similarities with One Piece), but saying is only just begining to become like the DB series is shallow, OP has always had similarities to DB but was never anything close to a mere immatation; OP is thing of it's own.

I've wondered this for a while: Since 4kids doesn't show blood in OP how do they explain luffy hitting Crocodile at the end? Sweat?

I do fear that one piece's popularity might get the best of it, but if oda plans how many chapters he wants, i think he'll stick to it. He seems decent in that way... but then i look at how he sold the dubbing rights to 4kids.. and my heart weeps... oh well
Does Eiichiro Oda OWN the rights to the anime? I'm pretty sure that's TOEI animation's department, the same studio that sold Dragonball to Funimation.

    go silmarillion readers
    Yeah

I actually wanted to put the statement about Feanor in my sig.
How he is the mightiest of all the children of Illuvatar etc.
But since i'm from Germany i only have that statement in german, which doesn't fit an english forum.
I couldn't find a translation and didn't want to do it myself (wouldn't have been tolkiens excact words).

If anyone has the silmarillion who could offer a little help in that matter, i'd appreciate it (PN me).

Sorry for offtopic, but i love Tolkien

And i already wrote my ontopic opinion. Nothing has changed since then (DBz great, OP great).

One Piece will not go the route of DBZ, because Oda has said several times that he's doing this for himself. He'll go to 100 volumes, no matter what, if people like it or stop liking it.

Anyways, One Piece also has much more solid of a story. DBZ suffered greatly from a shakey story, right from the end of the Sayian Saga on. It was to thrown together with poor pacing and an often asurb character powerup rate. Add that to the fact that quite of a few of the "main" characters took the sidelines completly for the whole saga, even for Goku, who was basically a non character for a good portion of the Freeza saga, showing up just in time to start the fight with Freeza.

DBZ had it's merits, but it held to many flaws, a weak and cobbled together story, inconsistant powerups and bad guy levels, and often absurb to be laughable plot twists.

One Piece continues to give the feel of a planned storyline, that things are happening for a purpose, and until that's gone, it won't go the route of DBZ

mMm well over all it seems that the plot needs to pick up in One Piece fast before it starts to get super repetive...I love one piece but currently the plot is fleeing i understand that they are in the process of becoming the *Great Strawhat Crew* but then again i think the plot should devolop seprately from the charaters possibly at a faster pace to build suspense? such as a set up *ace* *blackbeard* *shanks* *World goverment starting to move ect.. should start happening soon or it might drag on with alittle? and who thinks they now have a charpenter? xD o_O

If Shonen Jump is anything like Marvel and DC, Oda has no say at all over his creation's distribution. Hell, he was lucky enough to get certain ideas run past him for casting and story editing.

Anyways, I don't why comparing One Piece to DBZ is considered an insult. Every anime that involves a lot of action gets that comparison sooner or later. Then again, half of all SJ's titles are fighting manga. It kinda says something about DBZ when every popular manga is compared to it.

And penta, does oda really have no say in what happens to his creation? man that'd suck... if i owned it you'd have to remove all my fingers before i gave it to 4kids ^_^
True as I said before accept it or not this is a major part of the storyline. Declaring war on the WG, about Ohara, Robins past, possibly getting new bounties. Yea this is basically the story. I don't know why everyone's in a rush, like this isn't satifing enough.

Oda has a say in OP.........until it's shipped over sees. Now that's when he loses his powers over his own creation. They even had to change the game taking out 1/3 of the characters in the US. And OMG don't get me started on the voices.

I have never been more pissed off at a company than i am at 4kids. I mean ya it is 4KIDS but why not take a kids show to begin with. If you take time to actually read and understand it you will realize just how deep one piece gets.

And i think they will do something similar to what they did with smoker. First off they changed his name to chaser (wtf?) and they took away all his cigars, apparently now he just breathes smoke. Pathetic.

And about there bounties, i think there definitly getting a bump, probably a big one.

    I'm so touched

so theres alot of DBZ manga lover like me outhere, no matter that few silly kid in the forum keep sayin how "retarded" it was.

    hurray!

and yes, sadly, many of the writer (all writer, not just mangaka) can do nothing with their creation being "brutalized " for maximum profit by their publisher ( who always be the ones who had the copyright).

Akira sensei is a good example of this incident, other example would be JK Rowling, who can do nothin when the director of HP IV decide to cut all the opening scene of the movie.
