I haven't found an actual thread on this topic, but this is probably the single most profound theme in ONE PIECE.
What do you think it means?

What do you think it means?
that he was happy and didn't fear death, luffy had the same smile when he was about to be executed
wasnt his smile only bought up ONCE... when Buggy was about to decapitate luffy?
every other thing has just been similar personalities and traits between the two ... but the smile has only been mentioned once i think
same smile during don craig (creek in italy) fight when luffy was caught in the net and was falling into sea
"I may be dead, but my Will will never falter." Perhaps?
Dear cousin choppitychop89, you were a good relative, though I hardly knew ye.
it could be a smile without regrets. luffy tries his hardest in everything he does even if the chances of success are very small. whatever he does he does it without regret even if he ends up beaten to a bloody mess he regrets nothing. so when luffy, and gold rodger, smile on the executioners block it shows they are excepting their fate because they know that they tried thier hardest and do not regret any actions they did and if death is to be their fate it is one they chose.
maybe something along those lines.
"Grapes and grapes!"
along the same lines as bamboozler ^^
Well, I think it's time for my reply.
Gold Roger was, frankly, inhumanly courageous. His fortitude was at the point that not even Death or God can manipulate his spirit.
Only courage to confront your greatest fears can bring about your greatest joys, since a coward will always be bothered by fear.
His infinite amount of bravery is probably why Luffy acts so recklessly and stupidly.
However, one has to wonder, how can a person so brave follow morals and social values? Well, there is a difference between true courage and lack of fear. Those who do not fear, do not know value and righteousness. Those with courage know fear unconditionally, but have the resolve to confront even the greatest most threatening fears and risky dangers, and have solid and deep values. Brave people have strong values, and are thus good people. No values, no fear, and thus those people are criminals who lack real courage. Cowards are the worst, since they only have selfish values and fears, so they act for their benefit at the cost of other's livelihood.
Courage is evidently one of the greater themes in ONE PIECE. Just look at the Strawhat's stand against the world government. No coward can fight overwhelming odds like that.

I have to agree on the idea that Luffy's the same as Roger. Granny Kokoro says that Roger was a stupid guy like Luffy in Chapter 400. I wonder if Roger had superpowers? (a most definite yes) Actually, I wonder if Roger is a son of a god? Since both Roger and Jesus died for their followers, Roger could be the Jesus of ONE PIECE.Originally Posted by Ayato_kamina
It'll be interesting to see Luffy become Pirate King in less than 5 years since he set out to sea. Ace became 2nd division commander (and first mate) of Whitebeard in just 3 years.
Luffy's ultimate move: Gomu Gomu noooooo D. Cannon [a blast of D. will-powered atmosphere shoots at some great evil {the devil?}]
...maybe it should be called Gomu Gomu no Nuke D.
