I agree, there are some good messages in it. What annoys me is that the anime always downplays those messages in favor of the whole "nakama" thing. You know, that stupid friendship message they kept talking about in the show? Instead of using all the morals Oda puts in these things, they chose one and repeated it like a broken record. How could they.

From what I've heard others say, some believe it to be a little to much like Dragon Ball Z and rank it accordingly. Though I personnally love the manga and think it's extremely original, though the anime side stories sometimes make it look bad. (Naruto is like that too).

Well, I dont know. Myself, I heard only superlatives for both OP anime and manga. The only complain that I heard was that drawnings is a bit wacky. However, when I visited america, and seen one of thos 4kids OP anime version, I actually didnt get point and I thought for, about half of that chapter, that it is some kind of crazy OP parody.
So, I can guess, that everyone who seen 4Kids version of OP first, can be disgusted, with it.

i don't watch the anime... the french version disgusted me... (even if it's not butchered as the american's :P)
and the original version doesn't interest me ever, it's just too stretched.... i would only watch the big fights out of curiosity if i knew the corresponding episodes, but that's it ^^".... (i've seen an amv with some of zoro's figths, and it was great )

but for the manga, i really don't understand ....
- the plot doesn't even compare with naruto, it's on a complete different level !!
- drawings may seem a little childish (i like them a lot), and i think as others said that it is the main reason why some childish people (paradoxal, huh ? but so true ) stop there and critisize it like shit without even trying to read it
- the characters are just GREAT

so beside the drawings ?... maybe the pirate theme...??..... or the fact that nobody dies (again, some stupid childish people don't like it )


edit : it's true that in europe naruto is way overrated.... but some people begin to get upset of the no ending fillers.. and bleach is getting naruto's place, until bleach fillers kill it too :P

I saw the English dub and thought it SUCKED! The voice overs were realy, realy Sh*tty. I would never have gotten into it if it wasn't for the manga.

I don't know about other countries, but I think America isn't into One Piece because we've pretty much over-dosed on the Pirate theme over the years. Hell, if it wasn't for Pirates of the Caribbean, that genre would be dead as the dodo (thanks to Cutthroat Island).

As for the dub, I doubt it had anything to do with OP's lack of popularity. If anything, it's all the "fans" going "Don't watch it, it sucks!" that killed the Fox version. When people who don't know anything about One Piece start hearing that, they stay away instead of judging for themselves. Meanwhile, if they'd stuck with it, we would've eventually gotten a better dub since it's proven that popularity results in better dubs (IE: DBZ, Naruto, Sailor Moon, etc.).

Considering how much of a hard-on Oda has for Toriyama's work, I think he'd consider that a huge compliment.

hmmmm... in my opinion, watching anime with real voice is the best.. that would be japanese of course... So, why don't you guys watching the anime with the subtitles? (for english and dutch)... don't you think it would be way better?

ofcourse it's better but if u did watch English One Piece just suck. Plus the topic is why One Piece is underrated.

One Piece being underrated is better than it being overrated.
