Why did Moria and Crocodile not have haki?
I wonder how could Moria not have had any haki, even though he was a New World Pirate? Crocodile never has shown haki, even though he is confident enough to fight Mihawk/Don Flamingo and White Beard- but has no haki? Lucci did not, but even though he did a lot of training- it was in a particular martial arts so they were training that and NOT haki.
Probably if Lucci had haki he would have smashed Luffy, but so would have crocodile and probably Moria too.
VERY astute point babes. I was just thinking something along these lines yesterday, but more in terms of; why the "black armament haki" is now seeming to be the norm vs the previously introduced "invisible" type haki exhibitied by sentoumaru and releigh, also was Lucci's techinques partially haki like in nature? (Especially that final technique of his when he releases a burst of pressure at his opponents). The black Haki has been around a while with people like Vergo specializing in it as well as the pirate "Z" from the OP movie... but its just weird when someone like Sentoumaru, who is well renown in being well trained in Haki, didnt show the 'vulcanized' version of it when it was first introduced. I guess as the plot develops so will this ability.
For the very least I would like to believe pirates like Crocodile and Moria would have haki as they have 1) been around for ages, 2) were shichibukai and 3) challenged/encountered Yonkou (at one point or the other throughout their life). Its obvious that Haki is not the end all be all, i.e. just because you have Haki even though it gives you a bit of an upper hand it doesnt make you automatically better than someone who isnt (if the opponent is skilled). Case in point I would like to believe people like Ivanov, Kuma and Jinbe (just to name a few) have the ability to at least use the color of armament and observation haki...however we havent seen them use it bc they never really had to I guess? Im almost positive if either of those guys, Moria included were to go up against Caribou we would see them easily dispatching of the logia type with ease, showing that they have some level of mastery of haki. Im sure alot more people have the inate ability to use it.. they just dont consider it at the time. I am STILL of the belief that broke can use King's haki, to some degree and if only on women, due to being a famous celebrity (the guy had women fainting and foaming at the mouth like a boss!).
As with most manga/anime (and real life to a certain degree) once the initial barrier is broken then more and more the seemingly rare and impossible is more frequently reached and surpassed.

We can assume Moria and Crocodile did have haki. Reasons why they didn't use it on Luffy, or used it a to a lesser degree could vary, but they could all boil down to arrogance. Remember, the Strawhats have always been shadowed from their achievements until their conquest in Enies Lobby. So everyone underestimates them.
Lucci was, as you say probably, a degree lesser on achieving haki control. Through his martial arts and tenacity, he could put some of his "spirit"(invisible haki) on his attacks, hence why he beat Luffy down with raw physical strength.
My belief in armament haki is that the first degree of it is being able to touch a logia type. The black version(carbonized, whatever) is the second degree, which to make it easier to explain, just think it is 2x(invisible), so your attacks are stronger, and your toughness increases. So, I do not know if this is true, but to clarify with an example; with the carbnized version, if a sword attack comes at you, you can block it with your arm. on the other hand if you are just using the invisible haki you would have to evade.
off the top of my head i don't recall any logia fruit users to use armament haki. that's probably why croc doesn't use it. moria i would assume maybe knows about it but he also doesn't seem to be the direct fighter type. he did use oz a lot and then he started absorbing all the shadows when handling thing directly. why use your own power when you could absorb the skills of a thousand people?
^Akainu, Aokiji and Kizaru all used armament Haki.

Well, some people say Oda didn't think of Haki back then, but I don't think so. He had to think of a counter against Logias (instead of always looking for a weakness...).
But I don't see why it's that peculiar that Moria and Croc didn't have Haki. For one, they both got to the NW, but only getting there doesn't guarantee you to also have Haki. All the Supernovas probably had to go through a few hardships to get it and that also probably took a bit of time.
If you think back at how both Moria and Croc were crushed (or defeated) and then went back to Paradise, it's no wonder they stopped progressing. They simply went back to the not-so-deadly part of the GL and always fought enemies weaker than them.
This of course hinges on the time they spent in the NW. If it were a few years, then I'd really wonder how the fuck they didn't learn it.
It would even worse to think they had it but they didn't use it. How the hell do you think could Crocodile hold back on haki while giving his all to destroy Luffy?
@krazy: Don't forget that Sentomarou also said he was the world's best secret keeper and then he told them what happened with people teleported by Kuma (IIRC). I don't think we were meant to believe he had the World's Strongest Defense. And secondly, why would he use it against Luffy, when simply punching him was enough?
I think He haven't discovered it yet that is the reason he doesn't have it. Now i think both Daz Bones and He Has Discovered it.
