Well, it's pretty vague, but here's my theory:

When he got knocked around, it basically cleared everything in his head, emptying his mind and allowing him a greater intake of his surroundings. He was able to feel the flow of energy of all living and non-living things ( or breathing, as he called it). Him cutting metal has nothing to do with physical strength, rather he could always do it, now he just knows how. I guess I'm trying to say that the sword cut metal because he willed it, if you look at his flashback, he has one where his sensei says that there are swords that can't cut paper but can cut iron. It's all about what the wielder wants to cut

    Mysterious, no?

I think its more of zen matter induced by the life or death situation. Its hard to explain, but when the human body (in real life not just in One Piece)experiences a stressful situation the brain has a wierd effect. Not trying to say that I get into life or death situations all the time and I'm not suggesting anyone try it so they can be like Zoro. However, one time I was working on doing backflips on my trampoline which aren't too hard, but for some reason that particular day I was having problems with them (lesson number one in life listen to the signs). Somehow I over-rotated and fell backwards. However, my legs, which had bent to cushion the landing, snapped out as a reflex and sent me shooting out, sliding across the trampoline on my back. Thats when it happened, I can't explain it completely, nor can I remember the exact details (obviously I was thinking about other things like the future uselessness of my legs if I fell off, so I wasn't exactly documenting the process), but somehow, time itself slowed down. Also, I could in a sense, see and feel everything around me. When I went flying off the edge of the trampoline I felt the edge before without seeing it and I knew to grab onto the metal bar that encircles the trampoline. Then, using the momentum from my slide I did a quick backflip using the bar as a center point and landed in perfect balance. Then the moment was over and I stood up just in time to see my brothers jaw open to the ground. I think that is what happened to Zoro, faced with a stressful situation, he did basically what I have just explained, except with slightly different side-effects. Or maybe he did something completely different, just thought I would share my opinions.

Shiy!!!!. I had a similar accident. I was sparring( just fighting) my friend on a class trip. We were fighting in my room, but it was no childish fight, it was kicking, punching. On a moment i got distracted, and he kicked my in my chest. He has mighty powerful kicks like Sanji so i went flying back. My bad luck was that all the windows were open and we were on the second floor. In other words I was flying out and that worried me. I don't know how i did it but i backflipped and grabbed the edge of the window and landed hanging of the wall like motherfucin' spiderman and with my feet on the wall. My muscles reacted like rubber and i bounced back into the opened window. Firs there was a moment of silence, then we all started to laugh.

PS. To give you all idea of this guys kicking strength I'll tell you that i my weight is about 80 kilograms and i was nearly 2 meters from the window.

Or maybe it could be akin to Bakusai Tenketsu of Ranma's fame - that you can cut metal if you find the exact point WHERE to cut.

it was something similar to the matrix bullshit about bending spoons. doesnt mean anything, but sounds really cool. makes you want to go out back and try breaking stones with your head.

Wasn't that Ryoga and not Ranma? I recall the Grandmother teaching Ryoga how to punch through any type of rock if he knew where to punch. That freaked out Ranma of course. :b

When I said "of Ranma's fame", I meant the series, not the character
