Thread: what is 'D' stands for??

Monkey D Luffy
Portgas D Ace
Gold D Roger

any idea what the 'D' in their names stands for??

for luffy, I think dumb is quite suitable, Monkey Dumb Luffy...
but I really have no idea, anyone??

It will probably be revealed sometime later, as it's been brought up a couple of times. Deep meanings and explanations here we come

Always figured it was either a last name, like Luffy Monkey D. or stood for 'the' (pronounce it dee) so Luffy the Monkey, Portgas the Ace, Gold the Roger...

it's Gol D Roger or Gold Roger for short

& the D should have something to do with their bloodline
maybe there is a relation between luffy and gold roger
like maybe roger is luffy grandpa or something

Either bloodline or birth title. Veteran pirates in One Piece world make a fuss about that "D" thing...

for the D part, it's been a long time since everyone try to guess what it means..
Personnaly i don't think it's relative to the bloodline... i just can't see Luffy in the same family as Gold roger and blackbeard...
-> gold roger because Oda is too good to make luffy his grand child... it would be ... arf.. too bad.. (i think i would stop reading OP.. except if he has a VERY GOOD reason and the plot is well done...)
-> blackbeard cause he is a bad guy ^^ (but it wouldn't disturb be too much... moreover when ao kiji spoke to luffy about his grand father, luffy seemed angry (not hungry lol).. but i still not think they are blood related..)

and another thing, maybe the D something to see whit Dragon (the guy who saved luffy's crew from smoker..)

When everyone in luffy´s hometown celebrated about his first bounty the eldest said, it might not be luffy´s dream to to be a pirat but destiny, and looked as if he knew something.

I want to find out who Luffy and Ace's parents are. I bet it's revealed about 95% of the way through the series.

of course his family must be important in the world of one piece, maybe in the piracy, but Oda is not bad enough as to write he his gold's grandson... it would be too simple and would remove a big part of Luffy's merite ("oh, it's normal he is so strong, he is the son of ..").. enough mangaka give this kind of crap in their manga, and i don't think Oda would (hope).

here the reasons why his family must be important :
- ao kiji encountered luffy's grandfather
- Dragon is interested in Luffy although we don't know him..
maybe others i don't remember..
